Scaled Composites Completes Development Phase For SpaceShipOne Engine
In Jan 2000, Scaled defined a new integrated concept for the hybrid motor that allowed the entire propulsion system to be mounted to the spaceship by simple skirt flanges on the oxidizer tank.
By early 2001, Scaled had committed to developing the two main motor composite components in-house: The first is the nitrous oxide tank, a composite liner laid up onto titanium flanges, with a graphite over-wrap provided by Thiokol.
Scaled does not pre-announce the specific flight test plans for the space program, however completed accomplishments are updated as they happen.

According to Scaled Composites, late in the rocket plane's boost phase, the primary pitch trim control aboard the craft was lost.
However, Scaled Composites noted that the resulting "trajectory excursion" had two effects: For one, the vehicle did not climb as high as planned -- to a pre-launch altitude target of 360,000 feet (68.2 statute miles), or 110 kilometers.
At a post-landing press briefing on June 21, Burt Rutan, head of Scaled Composites said a decision on whether a 60-day notice would be forthcoming regarding future back-to-back flights needed to win the $10 million Ansari X Prize.
