Rutan employs 88 people at his company, Scaled Composites, in a warehouselike building adjacent to a taxiway.
Parked in a corner is one of the wildest-looking of them all: the Boomerang, a piston-engine light plane designed to carry seven people at speeds of about 300 miles per hour.
The nearly complete Boomerang is designed to solve the worst problem afflicting conventional twin-engine airplanes: if one engine fails, the aircraft slues violently to one side, then tends to spin out of control at critical moments (just after takeoff, for example).

There is a lot that just doesn't look right about Burt Rutan's 5-passenger Boomerang, the latest surprise to roll out of the hangar at Scaled Composites.

Morrow revises Boomerang business plan -25/04/2000-Flight International
Morrow Aircraft, the Oregon-based company planning to produce Burt Rutan's unconventional Boomerang piston twin, is revising its strategy to include leasing and operating the aircraft, as well as manufacturing it.
Under the original agreement reached in October 1998 between Rutan and Morrow, Scaled Composites is due to make a single prototype and two certification-test examples of a production version.
The company is focusing on explaining the Boomerang concept, which is designed to eliminate the single-engined handling problems experienced with most twins, while promoting its low-cost advantages compared to a small turboprop or turbofan-powered competitor.

So here for the first time (probably anywhere) is a final composite image that gives you a good look at the lovely corona that brisk winter's day (June in Australia), as it appeared to the eyes of those of us lucky to be on board.
The top preliminary version uses the original mediocre negative scans we first made, the lower one to the left came from excellent scans, combined to highlight many extra details, especially inner corona and prominences, and the lower right adds in the SOHO data to the optimum corona image, then cropped a bit.
His filters make capture and compositing a LOT easier than my usual 4-8 negatives graded along by hand, although there are other good reasons to optimize and combine images, still, and I expect that will never change.

Designed by aeronautic geniuses Burt Rutan and John Roncz, the 'Boomerang' is named for it's revolutionary foward-swept assymetric wing.
From a starting point based on the Beechcraft Baron, Burt and John proceeded to fix all of the aerodynamic mistakes in conventional twin design and came up with what is one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built.
The version is based on the Boomerang as displayed at the EAA Airventure Fly-In at Oshkosh in 1996.

Measuring 56.3 ft., it is the longest plane ever built by Rutan's Scaled Composites of Mojave, Calif. But aviation history could remember Proteus as something more–the plane that opened the door to space.
Today, as we watch the all-composite plane on its third shakedown flight, it is configured with a huge 54.7-ft. canard and a 77.6-ft. wing.
Depending upon its mission, its modular design allows these dimensions, as well as the size and position of the fuselage, to be changed.
