Scaled Composites: Bell Eagle Eye TiltRotor UAV
Scaled Composites was selected to design and fabricate the composite structure for the two demonstrator airframes, including the landing gear, and to integrate Bell-supplied propulsion and flight control systems.
All of the hard points and mounts were installed by Scaled and all the system components including engine, transmissions, oil coolers, avionics, flight control systems, flaps, and control surfaces were mounted and checked for clearance, interference and fit in the fuselage structure before the vehicles were delivered to Bell.
Scaled Composites also manufactured and integrated all the landing gear components for both vehicles.

Scaled Composites Voyager - long-range record plane
The Rutan Voyager which was conceived in 1981 would in one flight become the first aircraft to fly nonstop around the world without refuelling, so breaking the records for the longest timed flight and the longest distance flight.
Construction of the Voyager began in 1982 at Mohave in California, with the project being funded by private means and donations.
The Voyager, crewed by Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager, required the full length of the runway at Edwards Air Force Base, California, in order to lift off at 08:01 Pacific time on 14 December 1986, and the wobble of the wings caused their tips to scrape the runway.

 Scaled Composites
It was a bold innovation in aviation design, merging a state-of-the-art lightweight composite airframe with twin rear pusher-propellers, a swept-forward wing, and an innovative variable-sweep forward horizontal stabilizer (called a foreplane or canard) that changed configuration to compensate for the aerodynamic changes during flight.
(Scaled Composites was later acquired by the Wyman-Gordon Company in January 1989, and Burt Rutan was retained as the company's president and CEO).
The all-composite Starship lacked a conventional tail—using rudders on upturned fins or winglets at the end of each wing to provide directional control and stability in addition to a variable-sweep canard.

 Aerospaceweb.org | Aircraft Museum - Rutan Voyager
Disaster nearly struck even before the Voyager became airborne when the heavy fuel load so weighed down the wings that the tips scraped along the runway during the takeoff run.
Although the damaged tips resulted in greater drag, Voyager was maneuvered by ground personnel into regions of higher tail winds to compensate for the loss of performance.
Voyager was then disassembled and donated to the National Air & Space Museum where the aircraft is now on display.

Designed for maximum fuel efficiency, the twin-engine Voyager was completely constructed from composite materials, including an airframe weighing only 939 pounds (426 kilograms) and a main wing so bendable that the tip flexed three to five feet (0.9 to 1.5 meters) while in flight.
The Voyager is now on permanent display in the main gallery of the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., alongside such other famous aircraft as the Wright Flyer and Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis.
Burt Rutan expanded his successful experiments with composite materials to larger-scale projects with the formation of Scaled Composites, Inc., in 1982, for the design, fabrication, and flight testing of prototype aircraft projects for both the government and private industry.
