Leyland Motors was a British vehicle manufacturer of lorries and buses.
In 1946, AEC and Leyland Motors worked to form the British United Traction Ltd.
In 1955, through an equity agreement, manufacture of commercial vehicles under license from Leyland Motors commenced in Madras, India at the new Ashok factory.

Scammell were pioneers of articulated transport, at the time their Articulated Six-wheeler set the scene for the company’s individualistic approach to lorry design and building.
Later around 1930 Scammell developed the 100 tonner heavy haulage tractor and were to remain the UK’s leading builder of heavy haulage tractive units.

Because of their limited off road capability Scammell EKA recovery vehicles were usually issued to units with a peacetime recovery role or a wartime role mainly limited to route clearance.
As the total absorption of Scammell Lorries Ltd into the British Leyland conglomerate took place at about the same time as these vehicles came into service some are badged as Leylands.

J.Sumner Ltd was the initial name in 1895 and was formed when a Preston company, Coulthard and Co, purchased a half share.
In 1951 Leyland Motors acquired the Glasgow-based bus manufacturer Albion Motors Ltd. There followed some heavy pruning of the Albion bus range after the purchase and by 1953 only the Albion Victor was still being sold.
An amendment to the Construction and Use Regulations on 1st July 1956 saw the maximum length for double-deckers increased to 30ft and Leyland introduced a range of Titans to the new length.

In December 1924 the first diesel driven lorry with direct injection was exhibited in Berlin by MAN and six years later Daimler-Benz began series production of diesel powered commercial vehicles.
Following the introduction of the LW range, lorry makers began to offer Gardner engines as original equipment and, although the business in retrofitted units remained strong for several years, annual unit sales increased steadily from less than 500 to over 3,500 in 1937.
Their largest customers were Guy of Wolverhampton and Foden of Cheshire, both long standing clients; others included Atkinson Lorries of Preston, Bristol Commercial Vehicles of Bristol, Daimler Transport Vehicles of Coventry, ERF of Cheshire and Scammell Lorries of Watford.
