Teacher Resources - Collection - The Stars and Stripes: The American Soldiers' Newspaper of World War I, 1918-1919
The Stars and Stripes: The American Soldiers' Newspaper of World War I, 1918-1919 presents a full scan of each issue of the military newspaper that began publication on February 8, 1918, and was published every Friday for 17 months.
This newspaper, in the first 52 weeks of its existence, printed 381 poems, not counting the little carols on the Sporting Page or verse in such inside departments as 'The Listening Post' or 'Star Shells.' Possibly 40 of these were written by members of the editorial staff.
Established by experienced journalists who had worked for some of the nation's leading newspapers before the war, the paper relied on enlisted men as writers, editors, and managers and carried stories of primary interest to servicemen of the American Expeditionary Force — the soldiers on the frontlines in France.

 The Scanning FAQ - Halftone
Halftone scanning is scanning an original from an already screened source such as a magazine, coffee table book, newspaper, etc. However, many scanners now come with plug-ins, or custom software that has an option labeled Halftone.
For instance, If you perform a halftone scan with the Microtek plug-in set for a 5x5 60 dot #1 pattern (the recommended pattern for the Apple Laserwriter IIf photograde) it will look great when printed to the Laserwriter, but appear like a strange rippled newspaper photo when printed at 1200dpi on a Linotronic.
Halftone scanning is essentially treated like a greyscale scan by most software and the conventional wisdom says to scan the image at a resolution lower than the original in order to reduce the threat of moires.

In 1991 she created the first telephone dial-in newspaper and magazine service in the eastern U.S. The free service enables blind and low vision people throughout Maryland, Virginia and the D.C. to browse -- to skip and scan selected daily newspapers and magazines from any telephones any time of the day or night.
For blind, visually limited and handicapped people who can not effectively read print, volunteers, drawn from a pool of 350, read daily and weekly newspapers for the closed-circuit radio station and the telephone dial-in newspaper and magazine service.
Since many people in the television field believe that it could be at least five years before the commercial networks have converted to digital systems, we strongly believe that the low vision and blind audience should not have to wait for described programming until this occurs.

American Masters . Henry Luce PBS
Most Americans did not regularly read a Luce magazine; in a given week, far more were likely to scan a daily newspaper and listen to a radio newscast than to examine an issue of Life.
In time, Luce's formula of the directed synthesis could be seen in competing news services: in radio and television news reports, in an increasing number of newspaper columns and analyses.
Luce became, wrote Joseph Epstein, "a great grey eminence whom everyone, with tar brush in hand, painted black." (8) No other publisher of his rank had offered, in his own words, such resolute calls for American hegemony.

 Barnes & Noble.com - It Happened One Night -- Frank Capra - DVD - Black & White / Pan & Scan
'It Happened One Night' is the story of Peter Warren (Clark Gable), the happy go lucky newspaper hound who discovers that missing heiress, Ellie McPherson (Claudette Colbert) is actually traveling with him on the cross country night bus.
Undershirt sales plummeted when Gable appeared in the famous motel room scene without one; he was never sexier than as the rough-and-tumble newspaper reporter chasing Colbert's runaway heiress, on her way to New York City by bus to elope with a gigolo.
It is one of those movies where all the elements came together magically: Robert Riskin's charming script, Frank Capra's superb direction, and two sparkling performances by Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable, whose chemistry as the sparring rich girl/poor boy duo lights up the screen.
