Topic: SCANDISK

  DOS Command: SCANDISK
Purpose: Starts the Microsoft ScanDisk program which is a disk analysis and repair tool used to check a drive for errors and correct any problems that it finds (new with DOS Version 6.2).
The ScanDisk program cannot be used with CD-ROM drives, network drives, drives created by using the ASSIGN, SUBST, or JOIN commands, and drives created by using INTERLINK.
During a surface scan of an uncompressed drive, SCANDISK confirms that data can be realiably written and read from the drive being scanned.

 How To ScanDisk
ScanDisk, however, is also capable of doing a surface scan to check for physical damage.
ScanDisk can perform two types of tests: Standard which checks for cross-linked files and file fragments, and Thorough which adds a surface test for bad sectors.
When ScanDisk is running, each disk read or write causes ScanDisk to restart resulting in an even longer scan exercise.

Understanding ScanDisk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
When ScanDisk fails to read a sector in the data area of a hard disk volume, it repairs this problem by copying the readable sectors in that cluster to a new cluster taken from the end of the volume.
ScanDisk "fixes" this problem by assuming one FAT to be correct, and the other to be wrong.
ScanDisk's idea of what is "irrepairable" may differ from what manual recovery can do, and allowing ScanDisk to "fix" such problems will destroy any chance there may have been for data recovery.

 Scandisk[ w ] - General
ScanDisk was unable to finish correcting this error because the top-level folder on this drive is full.
When you run ScanDisk or Disk Defragmenter, the operation may restart when only a small percentage of the operation is finished and then continue to restart repeatedly, or the operation may take a very long time.
If you use the protected-mode (graphical) version of ScanDisk to perform a thorough scan (which includes a surface scan) on an integrated device electronics (IDE) hard disk that is larger than 32 gigabytes (GB) in size, ScanDisk may report errors on every cluster after approximately cluster number 967,393.

Smart Computing Article - Running . . . ScanDisk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
ScanDisk is the program that runs automatically when you reboot your computer after a power failure, lock up, or other problem that keeps you from using the normal shutdown procedure.
ScanDisk looks for and corrects these problems by moving data in a bad area to a good area of the disk.
The advanced options let you control what type of errors ScanDisk checks for, whether to create a log file of ScanDisk's results (the default file is Scandisk.log, which is in the root directory of your hard drive, C:\Scandisk.log), and how to correct the problems it encounters.

Scandisk is a software utility designed to look at the data integrity like any other software application Scandisk simply analyzes and if needed makes changes to the data on the hard disk drive (normal operations).
Scandisk continues to restart and never is able to complete its check of the hard drive.
This is caused when other applications are running in the background modifying data that is trying to be checked by scandisk.

Personally, when I run scandisk with autofix, I do so knowing that the hard drive is setup correctly and its values haven't been changed and there aren't any viruses that will interfere with the operation.
In other words, running scandisk in this manner doesn't create a new problem, it may simply may bring to light what the real problem is and most often it's a failing hard drive if new or additional clusters are marked bad.

 Scandisk
For an ordinary user, the thing to do is have Scandisk fix the problem, and don't have it save any damaged data to files, or make an "Undo" disk.
Scandisk also offers to do a "surface scan." This is a cluster-by-cluster test of an entire disk, in which Scandisk looks for bad clusters and can mark them as bad, so they're not used.
If Scandisk is finding errors a lot, the thing to do is to take a look at how you and others are using the PC, and look for poor technique, or maybe problem software that might be locking up the system and forcing a reboot.

Disabling ScanDisk (Windows 98 only)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
While running Scandisk is a good idea after some types of abnormal shutdowns (program hang ups, building power failures,...), a majority of times having Scandisk run automatically is more a nuisance than helpful.
Disabling the Scandisk feature is relatively easy, but as noted in the Copyright statement for this web site, anyone utilizing this process to disable Scandisk from running automatically after a bad shutdown does so at their own risk.
If you elect to disable the automatic execution of Scandisk, it is strongly recommended that you run it manually (instructions below) every 2-4 weeks to help maintain the integrity of your PC's file system (that's not a bad idea anyway; see Comments below).
