Scanian (linguistics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The characteristic Scanian diphthongs, which do not occur in Danish or Swedish, are in popular belief often seen as signs of Scanian natives' efforts to adapt from a Danish to a "proper" Swedish pronunciation.
General public and academic interest in protecting the Scanian dialect or language was first established in the early 19th century with the advent of folkloristics and romantic nationalism in Scandinavia (see for example Norwegian romantic nationalism).
Scanian was not well known north of Skåneland and its adjacent districts until the Scanian movie actor Edvard Persson sang his way into the hearts of the Swedish nation during the 1930s and 1940s.

Modern day linguistics knows that the status of language is not solely determined by linguistic criteria, but it is also the result of a historical and political development.
The Yiddish linguist Max Weinreich published the expression, "A shprakh iz a dialekt mit an armey un flot" ("אַ שפראַך איז אַ דיאַלעקט מיט אַן אַרמײ און פֿלאָט", "A language is a dialect with an army and navy"; in Yivo-bleter 25.1, 1945, p. 13), illustrating the fact that languages are created by assimilation.
Linguists of the Romanian Academy reacted by declaring that all the Moldovan words were also Romanian words; while in Moldova, the head of the Academy of Sciences' Institute of Linguistics, Ion Bărbuţă, described the dictionary as a politically motivated "absurdity".

I already said that Flemish is neither a language nor a group of dialects as linguists see it, certainly not a standard language or a standardized dialect as intended by those guidelines.
As stated, the article is not about a language or linguistics but uses the common factor of a complex of related concepts as a vehicle to guide readers along the intertwined aspects of the term Flemish.
The term 'Scanian' is by far more clear-cut and less of a topic than 'Flemish', and does have an article; hence your 'topics, not terms' idea is unintelligible with respect to this discussion.

The first linguistic dialectology focused on historical dialects, written texts serving as the basis for establishing the dialects of a language through the methods of comparative linguistics.
The methods of modern linguistic geography began in late 19th-century Europe with the use of informants rather than texts, and resulted in the first linguistic atlases of France, by Jules Gilliéron, and of Germany, by Georg Wenker.
In recent years linguists have become increasingly interested in social dialects, such as the languages of social groups within an urban population and the languages of specific occupations (farmers, dockworkers, coal miners, government workers) or lifestyles (beatniks, drug users, teenagers, feminists).

Notably, the linguistic concept of language is only concerned with spoken varieties, or vernaculars, and does not depend on their social status or level of cultivation, and the presence or absence of a corresponding literary tradition plays no role at all in defining a language.
They represent what are often called regional languages in a specific sense, meaning that they are intimately related to the dominant language of their area and, because of the lack of an established literary tradition, they can from a sociolinguistic point of view be regarded as dialects.

It is the linguistic joint product of a group, and such a joint product exists for every possible combination of language users, with the dialect for some groups (a close family, say) being quite large, that for other groups presumably being an empty set.
Linguistic evolution has primarily been through the process of division, a result of geographical isolation and lack of cultural interchange.
The one possible exception to this is Tajikistan, where cultural integration along linguistic lines would take it away from the Türkic cultures with which it is usually associated, and closer to the Persian cultures of Iran and especially Afghanistan, where ethnic Tajiks and others speak the Dari dialect of Persian.
