The Comics Journal - Scanlation Nation: Amateur Manga Translators Tell Their Stories
It wasn't until a group contacted me to ask about using some of my work in their scanlations, that I really considered what it meant to me. In fact, if they hadn't approached me regarding what was at the time my most mature and intellectual project, I might have refused and ended all consideration.
Schlicher worked with a single partner: "The girl who had contacted me regarding the scanlation project was the one who acquired the manga from the monthly magazine that it was published in and she would scan it, then send me the raw images.
Sure, there are some scanlators who continue releasing work even after a series is licensed, but for many, it's about sharing their favorite manga with other fans of the form, exposing non-Japanese-speaking readers to stories they might otherwise never get to experience.

  Scanlation - Definition, explanation
Scanlation, sometimes referred to as scanslation, is a term used for manga which has been scanned and translated by fans from its native language (usually Japanese or Korean) to a Western language, commonly English, French or Spanish.
Scanlations are often done to translate manga to a language it never would be in otherwise.
Many fans, however, disagree with scanlations on the basis that there is a simple alternative that supports the creators of the manga: Instead of editing the translations into digitized images, they can be placed online as a stand-alone text file which can be printed and used to read a legitimately purchased manga tankōbon;.

A related issue is the practice of scanlating from French or Chinese editions; nuances are lost through the layers of translation.

 yaoi.ca: Scanlations - FAQ
The benefit of a text translation (over a scanlation) is that many subtleties bound within the Japanese language are usually not lost (with a good translator) because there is no need to worry about fitting everything into a limited text bubble.
Scanlations are provided as a service to English speakers so that they may better understand the story.
Scanlations are not intended to replace the purchase of the manga.

 Boston Translation: Manga and Scanlation
Several folks have written in to tell us more about scanlation, in which amateur translators "dub" the scanned pages of a manga with new text; the product is distributed by the same file-sharing techniques employed by music fans to download illicit tracks.
Manga publishers are not meeting the market demand for translation; fans who’d like to get their hands on a particular title are forced either to learn Korean or Japanese or turn to underground sources whose reproduction of source texts is illegal under current copyright statutes.
Although they scanlate at their own risk, this fan community is thriving and well-organized, with devoted Spanish-language and German counterparts.

While scanlators operate somewhat outside legal boundaries -- the works they're republishing are copyrighted and proprietary, and there isn't a penny of licensing money exchanging hands -- their existence is tolerated by the commercial publishing houses because, frankly, scanlators play the invaluable role of identifying new titles that are hotly in demand.

To all the scanlators out there, before you complain about other groups stealing your work, leechers not appreciating or whatever scanlators complain about these days, maybe it’s good to go back to WHY you scanlate.
Something about a foreign scanlation group “stealing” a lot of projects from them (stealing here refers to something like taking scans, translation (and retranslate) and edit without permission).
I was informed, because one of my projects is on their list (Now to be honest, I’m not sure if they asked for permission, since frankly, I really lost track at groups coming to me every week and ask for permission to do a different project in a different language).

On the other hand, it could be argued that much of Viz's current audience are fans that have read the fan scanlations and thus prefer a certain translation.
