  saned
saned is the SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) daemon that allows remote clients to access image acquisition devices available on the local host.
For saned to work properly, it is also necessary to add a configuration line to /etc/inetd.conf.
If you follow this example, please make sure that the access permissions on the special device are set such that saned can access the scanner (the program generally needs read and write access to scan- ner devices).

Scanner Access Now Easy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The SANE API is public domain and its discussion and development is open to everybody.
SANE differs from TWAIN in that it is cleanly separated into frontends (user programs) and backends (scanner drivers).
Many scanners support the attachment of document feeders which allow a large number of sheets of paper to be automatically scanned in succession.

The purpose of this backend is primarily to aid in debugging of SANE frontends.

SANE makes it easy to support a wide variety of devices and of applications with a minimum amount of programming effort.
Now that you have seen how to use some of the programs that come with the SANE distribution, it is time to tell you what else is included.
The net driver is again a pseudo-driver; it provides access to remote scanners by connecting to the SANE daemon (saned) running on machine B. Machine B in turn uses dll again to provide access to a variety of other drivers.

Penguin-Breeder - Scanner Access Now Easy
SANE stands for "Scanner Access Now Easy" and is an application programming interface (API) that provides standardized access to any raster image scanner hardware (flatbed scanner, hand-held scanner, video- and still-cameras, frame-grabbers, etc.).
While SANE is an acronym for "Scanner Access Now Easy" the hope is of course that SANE is indeed sane in the sense that it will allow easy implementation of the API while accommodating all features required by today's scanner hardware and applications.
Specifically, SANE should be broad enough to accommodate devices such as scanners, digital still and video cameras, as well as virtual devices like image file filters.

The function level a scanner supports is determined during the initialization of the device.
A scanner that is not recognized may default to the function level B3, which means that not all func- tions that the scanner may be capable of are accessible.
If the scanner is not even recognized as an Epson scanner this is prob- ably because the device name reported by the scanner is not in the cor- rect format.

SDB:Configuring Scanners from SUSE LINUX 9.2 - openSUSE
Applications that use a SANE backend to access a scanner are referred to as SANE frontends or simply frontends.
Rather than accessing the scanner hardware directly, a backend uses the kernel together with various subsystems for the data transmission to the scanner hardware.
For debugging the debug-messages of the various layers in SANE and the test-mode of "scanimage" are useful.
