By scanner window 105 being substantially in contact with document 103 is meant that the distance between scanner window 105 and document 103 is very small so that the document remains in focus even given the narrow depth of field of the optics in CIS 101.
Scanner window 405 is located interior to and against the front (document) side of integral housing unit 441, and thus has a protruding part 449 that fits in the opening of the front side of housing unit 441.
Conventional prior-art implementation scanners using a CIS often include a roller for maintaining contact between the document and the scanner window, and typically such a roller may be positioned to impart a force on the document forcing the document against the focal area.

In CIS scanners this is accomplished by: 1) focusing through and onto the outer surface of a scanner window, and 2) dragging the document across the window, hence keeping it in focus during scanning.
This aspect of the invention is contrasted with prior art scanners that include a spring arrangement to maintain contact between the document and the CIS unit.
Scanner rollers 203 are substantially fixed relative to the body of scanning device 103, and the spring loaded platen moves away from the rollers, the movement being by the thickness of the document.

The scanner 10 comprises a scanning module 12 used for scanning a document, a motor 16 for driving the scanning module 12 left and right inside the scanner 10, and a control circuit 14 for controlling operation of the scanning module 12 and the motor 16.
If the scanner 10 scans the document 100 at 600 dpi (dots per inch), 30 seconds are typically required for the scanning module 12 to scan the document 100 while traveling in the first direction 101.

The scanner makes a good copy machine when used with a laser or inkjet printer.
A Line art 8.5 x 11 inch page at 300 dpi uses "only" one megabyte of memory, and 600 dpi would be 4 megabytes (however 600 dpi color would be 100 megs!).
My frank opinion is that the free OCR software that comes free with most scanners is not very useful, it is too limited.
