Few Lowland malts age well beyond their teens as the lightness of the whisky tends to be overpowered by the oak and cedar notes that emerge from the cask.
Scapa is one of those whiskies that falls into the relatively affordable range (about $35 to $45), yet has a following of fans that is almost cult-like in its loyalty and devotion.
Lowland malts tend to have a distinctive lightness and oftentimes a "toasted marshmallow" quality, and Highland malts tend to be recognized for their fruity, flowery, or sherry characteristics.

Highland Park Single Malt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Highland Park Single Malt is a Scotch Whisky distilled by Highland Park Distillery, Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands, the northernmost distillery in Scotland, a half mile north from that of Scapa.
Highland Park is one of the few distilleries to malt its own barley, using locally cut peat from Hobbister Moor.
The malt is peated to a level of 20 parts per million (ppm) phenol, and then mixed with unpeated malt produced on the Scottish mainland.

Single Malt Whisky - Alfred Barnard - Scapa
At Scapa, the foundations alone remain, and when first discovered, a considerable quantity of bone and stone implements were found therein, with a large number of ornamented clay vessels and a few Roman coins of the first century.
The first building, as you approach on the left, is the Malting House, 80 feet long by 54 feet wide, the top Boor of which is used as a Barley Store, having two cast iron water Steeps at one end, 3 feet deep, each capable of wetting 25 quarters of grain at one time.
We now crossed the way to the south of the Malting, and came to the Kiln, a detached building, 29 feet square, floored with the German sectional steel wire flooring; it is heated with peat in the ordinary manner.

Scapa is available in the US in a 12-year-old (40 vol.) expression.
It is pleasant, but has more of a Highland nature than an island malt, due in part to the fact that the casks are matured at the Deanston distillery in the Highlands.

Malt Whisky or Scotch is usually classified in one of four main categories: Highland, Lowland, Speyside, and Islay.
The flow of water over hills of granite and through moors of peat, add a refined smokiness to many of the malts whiskies and the slightly more sheltered nature of the terrain imparts a specific gentleness and delicacy to their character.
Lowland whiskies reflect the calm, lush countryside of the region and tend to be light, soft and, ellow and gentle on the palate.

Malt Madness - by Johannes van den Heuvel (All about single malt scotch whisky, not whiskey)
I usually tend to prefer overproof malts to those bottled at a whimpier 40 or 43%, but in this case the bottling with the lower ABV provides the depth and complexity that attracted me to single malts in the first place.
However, for a full-time malt maniac like myself a malt needs to show something special to reach the 80's and a score in the 90's is reserved for the very best of the best; a precious few whiskies that deserve to be remembered forever.
The single grains were the clear winners of the evening but the other categories performed admirably as well.

Single Malt Scotch Whisky Information - scotchwhisky.net
A Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the product of one specific distillery and has not been mixed with whisky from any other distilleries.
The greatest concentration of malt whisky distilleries can be found in the Speyside region of north-east Scotland, with Highland, Lowland and Islay being the other main malt whisky producing zones.
Each of these regions has its own particular distinctive style of malt whisky and although it is not possible for two malts to be identical, even if the distilleries that produce them happen to stand side by side, it is usually possible to distinguish in which region of Scotland a particular whisky was made.
