Scaphopoda - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
SCAPHOPODA, the third of the five classes into which the Phylum Mollusca is divided.' The Scaphopoda are marine Molluscs with the body, especially the foot, adapted to a burrowing life in sand.
Heart and blood-vessels are entirely absent; the blood is contained in sinuses which have no distinct walls or endothelial lining, and the principal of which are the perianal, the pedal, the visceral and the pallial.
It is remarkable that in Scaphopoda only among Mollusca the blood-spaces are in communication with the external medium: a pair of apertures near the renal openings lead from the perianal sinus to the exterior and allow the blood to escape during violent contractions of the body.

 Introduction to the Scaphopoda
The Scaphopoda are a distinctive group of molluscs commonly known as the "tusk shells" because their shells are conical and slightly curved to the dorsal side, making the shells look like tiny tusks (see the photos below).
The scientific name Scaphopoda means "shovel foot", a term that refers to the "head" of the animal, which lacks eyes and is used for burrowing in marine mud and sediments.

Scaphopoda first appear in the Ordovician (see also Reynolds for references for the Ordovician date) or the Devonian (Engeser and Riedel) or even the Mississippian, depending on one's interpretation of the earliest forms.
The Class Scaphopoda is divided into two orders, the Dentaliida and the Gadilida or Siphonodentalioida).
The latter is distinguished by the constriction of the anterior aperture and the shape of the central tooth of the radula (Reynolds.

 The Scaphopod Page
The Scaphopoda are a class of benthic infaunal molluscs that are characterized by a univalve, tusk-shaped shell that is open at both ends.
This division is based primarily on the constriction of the anterior aperture in the Gadilida and the shape of the central tooth of the radula (Emerson, 1962), although there are also several shell, radular and anatomical differences between the two groups, as enumerated by Scarabino (1979) and Steiner (1992b).
While all maintain the dichotomy of the Scaphopoda into the orders Dentaliida and Gadilida, each scheme presents a different distribution of genera among family groups (Staurobogatov,1974; Palmer, 1974; Chistikov, 1975, 1978; Steiner 1992b; Scarabino, 1995).

 Palaeos Metazoa: Mollusca: Phylogeny
During the 90s the two competing hypotheses of evolutionary relationships among conchiferan molluscs: the Diasoma-Cyrtosoma concept recognizing the clades (Tryblidiida, (Bivalvia, Scaphopoda), (Gastropoda, Cephalopoda)); and the Helcionellid concept with (Tryblidiida, (Bivalvia, (Gastropoda, Scaphopoda, Cephalopoda))).
Recently, Waller (1998) has overturned this traditional view by proposing that the Scaphopoda and Cephalopoda are sister groups within the subphylum Cyrtosoma.
After the separation of the gastropod lineage, the stem-group of Scaphopoda and Cephalopoda comprised high-shelled, dorsoventrally elongated helcionellids with a deep mantle cavity, multiple cephalic feeding tentacles, and a circular area of muscle-shell connection.
