There's an exchange in the film that really helps put his character in perspective, as Francis relates how once in Catholic school he got the palm of his hand smacked by a nun with a ruler for clowning around.
By the way, another scene worth seeing this film for is when Max strips off his clothes in order to go to bed...he's wearing like ten shirts, and watching him remove them is like watching the clowns come out of the little car at the circus.
This film reminded me of John Steinbeck's classic novel "Of Mice and Men" who was brought to the screen in 1994 with Gary Sinise and John Malkovich in the title roles.

 Jerry Schatzberg
Pacino costarred with Gene hackman in his next film, “scarecrow” (1973), a moody tale of two drifters which in many ways is an apotheosis of 70’s alienation and confusion.
The film centers on the world he knew best, fashion photography and the woman who at the time was closest to him, Faye Dunaway, who plays the lead.
This is also evident in his second film with the drug addicts in “The Panic in Needle Park” and the drifters in “Scarecrow”, his third.

 Arthurian Film
Donner's film, which was shelved by the studio for several years before being dumped for television release, is one of the silliest films ever made about the Arthurian legend.
The charges leveled against the film are generally that the lead roles were miscast, that the direction was ponderous, and that, at nearly three hours, the film was too long.
Clearly, Zucker intends his film to be an Arthuriad for the 1990s, but the film fails to capture the spirit of the original legend or to make a case for its contemporary translation of the oft-told story of the Arthur-Lancelot-Guinevere love triangle.

Jerry Schatzberg Biography :: Hollywood.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Critics were dismissive of the film and its confounding structure, but the director hit pay dirt with his sophomore effort, the gripping "Panic in Needle Park" (1971).
"Scarecrow" looked gorgeous (thanks in part to Schatzberg's photographic background and the expert cinematography of Vilmos Zsigmond) and the performances (including those of Ann Wedgeworth, Eileen Brennan and Penelope Allen) demonstrated Schatzberg's skill with actors, but the episodic script and its maudlin ending undercut what could have been a great motion picture.
Based somewhat on screenwriter David Freeman's own experiences, the film depicted a lazy, amoral journalist (Christopher Reeve) who concocts a fictional portrait of a pimp that bears a strong resemblance to a vicious, real-life procurer who is a suspect in a murder case.

He explains that in the film, a crime syndicate plants a car bomb that kills the protagonist's wife; the filming of the explosion resembles an atomic blast and does not show the bomb's damage, thus connecting the car bombing to a cliche common to 1950s films featuring the detonation of a nuclear device.
Film director Martin Scorsese has been exploring the soul of America since his 1973 film 'Mean Streets.' Scorsese's films depict violence and sexuality in a culture obsessed with images in the media.
Film noir is distinguished by its interest in social context and its emphasis on the dark side of its characters.

The second section covers selected films of the year, done in the same general format as the entries in Magill's Survey of Cinema--with the added feature of a list of where reviews of the film may be found.

Issues concerning the use of historical films to study society and values is discussed, with particular attention to the propaganda films made by the Nazis between 1933 and 1945.
The film can be read as a close examination of an individual's narcissistic disorder and its origins and development in his family, with hints at such things as the narcissistic disturbances in other families.
In this film, she contends, maleness can be studied by watching the protagonists act like members of an unknown--and at the same time familiar--tribe.

Superbly acted by Pacino and Hackman--and grittily photographed by Vilmos Zsigmond--Schatzberg’s film contains a brilliant blend of comedy, drama, and tragedy, resulting in a truly unforgettable viewing experience (a la MIDNIGHT COWBOY), making SCARECROW a stellar example of the highly personal character-driven films that made 1970s Hollywood such a brilliant, distinct period.
