Matthew Reilly - Scarecrow   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Written in now-trademark Reilly style, Scarecrow vividly takes readers on a whirlwind trip around the world, trashing billions of dollars worth of military machinery, property and weaponry (some real, some visionary) as he goes, and taking on bounty hunters, international intelligence agencies and political superpowers.
Reilly spares no character – if they aren’t advancing the novel (or if their death will) their lives are tossed away like cardboard dolls, never to be written of again.
As in Area 7 and Ice Station, the new novel has an acute awareness of international diplomacy, and some of the events in Scarecrow are eerily reminiscent of recent world events, or take popular conspiracy theories and rumours to the next level - making fictitious enemies of the world’s superpowers.

Area 7; Temple; Contest; Ice Station—fans of Reilly's novels know that no one writes faster-moving adventure fiction, so it's a shock to read, in an interview with Reilly included at the back of this novel, that he aimed to "create a new level of speed and pace" here.
And even the traditional novel form is secondary in this entertainment entity; this is as much video game as novel, complete with meticulous diagrams of most of the many locales (a penal installation in Siberia; an office tower in London, etc.) and literary sound effects ("An ominous deep-seated thromming emanated....").
As with Reilly's other novels, there is a multi-faceted plot, and a veritable army of bad guys from various groups or countries, who are usually all trying to kill each other at one point or another.

The computer science students who participated in the project also suggest that a system like Erebus could be extended beyond fish farming to protect orchards and vineyards where farmers experience similar problems with deer, fl bears and other neighbors.
