Peppered moth predation experiments - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The only previous experiments of this type were Ronald Fisher and E.B. Ford's (1947) with the scarlet tiger moth.
Moths were released into a large (18m by 6m) aviary, where they were fed on by great tits, (Parus major).
He thus showed that the melanistic phenotype was important to the survival of peppered moths in such a habitat.

Arctiidae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arctiidae is a family of moths with around 11,000 species found all over the world.
This family includes the groups commonly known as tigers (which usually have bright colours) and footmen (which are usually much drabber).
They can be poisonous, or can look just like kinds of moths that are poisonous.

 Moths
Thus, the typical moth lives 2 ostensibly distinct lives, filling 2 distinct ecological niches; it is born as a terrestrial, vegetarian eating machine and is “reborn” as a winged creature of the night, hell-bent on completing its reproductive cycle.
Unfortunately, moth caterpillars are infamous for the exceptional cases; the decimation of crop plants by extreme generalists such as the cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni; Noctuidae), and the destruction of wool clothing and stored grains by moths in the family Tineidae.
The smaller moths are too small a morsel for the bats to chase after, and many of the larger moths, such as hawkmoths and giant silkmoths, may be too large for bats to catch and eat.

 Grasshoppers
Butterflies and moths can easily be distinguished from other insects by their wings, which are covered with thousands of tiny overlapping scales, much like tiles on a roof.
There is another small group of species in the tiger moth family (Arctiidae) that actually advertise their poisonous nature to hunting bats.
Moths in this group are poisonous due to toxins in the plant species that their larvae eat.

Day-flying Moths   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Some moths even require hot and sunny conditions before they take to the air, and many are brightly coloured, so they are not that different from butterflies.
There are few true day-flying wetland moths but the Scarlet Tiger prefers damp habitats and flies in sunshine in southern and west England and Wales.
A number of moth species are readily disturbed from vegetation during the day but if watched it can be seen that they quickly find a new hiding place since they prefer to fly at night.

The tiger moths include many of the familiar caterpillars found wandering about gardens and over roads in the fall.
Dense body hair may be absent in the algae and lichen-feeding species and Utetheisa—the former possess stout barbed spines and an anal comb that is used to flick frass away from the feeding site.
Most tiger moth caterpillars have crochets arranged in a linear series with the outermost ones reduced in size (figure 4).

Hardy-Weinberg in Practice   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
This is a classic data set generated by Ford (1971) on wing coloration in the scarlet tiger moth (Panaxia dominula).
Determining that a locus is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium is essential before you can test other hypotheses, such as whether samples from 2 different populations are significantly different in genotypic frequencies (which would suggest that they were evolutionarily distinct units).
When comparing 2 or more sets of observed data (as opposed to the tiger moth example which compares an observed set to an expected set derived from the observed numbers), you would use another form of chi-square analysis known as a contingency test.

 Butterfly Gifts for Animal Lovers
Butterfly and moth eggs vary greatly in size between species, but they are all either spherical or ovate.
As Lepidoptera, butterflies have four wings, but unlike moths, the fore and hindwings are not hooked together, permitting a more graceful flight.
Butterflies are often confused with moths, but there are a few simple differences between them, including colour, habits, and pupating appearance.

Moth myths   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Some species such as the Scarlet Tiger, the Green Silver-lines and the Peach Blossom are very colourful.
In fact, only a few species do, and they require clothes that are preferably dirty and hidden away in dark, sheltered places where they are not disturbed.
Perhaps the most consistent difference is that nearly all moths have a hook-like structure, which is not present in the majority of the butterflies, joining the hindwing to the forewing.

Clarke’s research into lepidoptera included not only studies of Papilio machaon and mimicry but also the peppered moth Bison betularia and the relation between the prevalence of its carbonaria form and industrial pollution.
In 1988 Clarke rediscovered a colony of Scarlet Tiger Moths (Panaxia dominula), originally established at the Wirral Way, West Kirby, Merseyside by Sheppard in 1961, and this enabled him to investigate population changes.
There is also correspondence on specific subjects, chiefly lepidoptera and including in particular material relating to work on the moth Bison betularia.
