The island, which has not been permanently inhabited since 1970, is over 300 metres high.
In 1934, the island was the site of an experiment by (A person of German nationality) German inventor (Click link for more info and facts about Gerhard Zucker) Gerhard Zucker to deliver the island's mail by (A jet engine containing its own propellant and driven by reaction propulsion) rocket, but it was a failure.

Zucker announced a demonstration firing of his rocket over 1600 m of water between the town of Harris and the Isle of Scarp.
This smaller model airframe was 1.07 m long with a diameter of 18 cm.
