Now, while the reading of shit may uncover impurities, the fact that something can be "pure shit" contradicts the interpretation of scatalogical as "impure", QED.
Scatalogical means, rather, "obsessed with obscenity", at least in my book (the OED).
In fact, that's not all: "The Professor and the Madman" mentions that, in the argot of Victorian England, "pure" was a synonym for "shit"; the practice of the time was to gather dog faeces(pure) off the streets of London's Lambeth/Surrey suburb to be used in the tanning of leather.

Antonin Artaud!   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
"Pour En Finir Avec le Judgement de Dieu" is a heretic's scatalogical tirade at the extreme of the linguistic lunatic fringe.
The work defies description, and although it was actually recorded in the studios of the French Radio at the end of 1947 and scheduled to be broadcast at 10:45 PM on February 2, 1948, the broadcast was cancelled at the last minute by the director of French Radio, Vladimir Porche.
Citing Artaud's scatalogical, vicious and obscene anti-American and anti-Catholic pronouncements as something that the French radio audience could do without, he upheld this censorship in the face of widespread support from many culturally prominent figures including Jean Cocteau, Jean Louis Barrault, Rene Clair and Paul Eluard.

Despite the ongoing vogue in rehabilitating “avant-garde” and “experimental” artists within the institutions of art historical orthodoxy, one artist whose work has so far escaped systematic anthologisation is the post-war American painter Cy Twombly.
Thus Krauss writes: “the scatalogical as an operation … appears in the way graffiti has entered the field of modernist art.
Whether in the form of Duchamp’s moustaches penned on the Mona Lisa or the lacerations carried out on posters preserved by the affichistes, the destructive, performative character of graffiti is to be felt, as it acts against the high, neutralised, cultural form to lower it.”

This is actually a community access show (which I've never seen), but they saved their raunchiest, weirdest stuff for this screening, which included such lowlights as the Pamela/Tommy Lee sex tape, the Paris Hilton sex tape, and Chuck Barry pissing on his wife's face.
Plus lots of other scatalogical strangeness, capped off by a woman sending a profoundly bizarre come-on video to the object of her affection, Stevie Vai, featuring an astounding three-minute queef solo.
Saturday was a screening of Santo contra la invasión de los marcianos, presented in glorious Foleyvision [mpeg], that is, live voice-over and sound effects.

In film, Germans were able to commit scatalogical atrocities to celluloid with remarkable flair and frequency.
For example, in "Otmar Bauer Presents", the eponymous writer/director sits at a dinner table and proceeds to shit, vomit, urinate, and ejaculate into his plate and then devour it.
When used properly, shit can be a powerful tool to convey a message, and its very use should not preclude a work from serious examination.

I'm not sure how this plays out in the legal field, but it seems to me that a very strong case could be made that "priceless" mark is already substantially diluted, and has come to represent a generic situation or use - ala "Kleenex" or "Xerox".
