Scatman was born as Benjamin Sherman Crothers on 23rd May 1910 in Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana.
The Crothers were not a poor family, mainly because of their cumulative efforts in earning a living and as a result they had a little house complete with a garden, chickens and pigs on 922 Gilbert Avenue in a part of Terre Haute known locally as 'Baghdad'.
Scatman died on 22nd November 1986 and he was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills with approximately 300 friends, fans and family attending the ceremony.
From Terre Haute, Indiana Benjamin Sherman Crothers (his name at birth) was the son of a cobbler who at the age of 14 began to teach himself to play the drums and guitar.
In 1985, he developed a tumor on his lung; it spread to his esophagus and ScatmanCrothers died in November 1986.
By the early 1940s, Crothers was a regular at the popular jazz clubs in Chicago, both in the Loop and on the South Side.
Crothers recorded two more hits later that year: "On the Sunny Side of the Street" and "Dead Man's Blues." He became a regular guest on Harris's show, and the pair continued to collaborate on records and in films for years to come.
Discographies agree that Crothers was indeed working at Modern at the time, so a good guess is that Crothers may have been singing in front of Moore's band for this session, although his name does not appear on the record.
NEW YORK—In one of the few public appearances since his 1986 death, the reanimated corpse of actor-comedian ScatmanCrothers held a press conference Monday to decry telemarketing offers which are misleading or downright fraudulent.
Pausing momentarily to stuff his entrails back into his stomach cavity, Crothers recounted the sad story of Coral Gables, FL, retiree Edna Kalter, who was swindled out of her life savings of $19,000 by a phony sweepstakes offer.
Speaking in a raspy shadow of a voice that, even in life, was famously husky and gravelly, the onetime voice behind cartoon superpooch Hong Kong Phooey urged consumers to use extreme caution when approached by phone solicitors.
Scatman decided that the whole plane needed entertainment so he broke out his banjo and walked up and down the isles singing Niger Man. Needless to say - there were only about 20 of us from the shoot and about 100 others from I don't know where.
The wonderful thing about Scatman was that he was best of the old school, understood the new school.
BTW ScatmanCrothers is fl, as are most rappers that use the term "Nigga," so him saying "Nigger" wouldn't be offensive UNLESS it was derogatory..

When they put in on the turntable, Bihari said, "That's ScatmanCrothers singing, but we never issued it." Bihari's memory was fuzzy, because the recording had indeed been issued, in 1949 as Modern 674, and issued as "Rock And Roll" by Wild Bill Moore.
Some discographies agree that Crothers was indeed the singer, and some say Wild Bill Moore sang it himself and make no mention of Crothers ever having recorded for Modern Records.
Here is ScatmanCrothers bio: Singing, dancing and playing drums in high school led Sherman Crothers (b.
African- American entertainer ScatmanCrothers supported himself as a drummer throughout his high-school years.
For the next three decades, Crother's movie roles varied in size; he was seen to best advantage as the concerned handyman in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980).
Adult TV fans will remember ScatmanCrothers as Louie the garbageman on the 1970ssitcomChico and the Man; Crothers also did voice-over work in the title role of the Saturday morning cartoon series Hong Kong Phooey.
He appeared as a guest on many of the shows popular in the 1970s, but was most noted for his supporting role on the sitcomChico and the Man. He starring in three short-lived 1980s television series: One of the Boys (1982), Casablanca (1983), and Morningstar/Eveningstar (1986).

The Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies is open all summer, but between the months of October and May it closes because it is unreachable due to the snow.
The Overlook is obviously a bad place, supposedly built over an ancient Indian burial ground as the manager says, but already Danny is having shocking visions of it, with gallons of blood pouring from the elevator doors, or creepy twin girls blankly staring at him.
When they arrive to stay at the building, they meet Dick Hallorann (a gently charming ScatmanCrothers), the cook who gives Wendy the tour of the kitchens and storeroom, but also asks Danny if he would like some ice cream - without speaking.
With the help of his sidekick, Enoch (ScatmanCrothers), and a pretty social worker, Zerelda (Diana Lynn), he determines to expose a crooked district attorney (Hugh O'Brien) who may have been pocketing funds earmarked for the orphanage.
Crothers makes an especially strong impression, particularly in his show-stopping musical numbers.
