Scavenger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scavengers are useful to the ecosystem by feeding on and therefore breaking down dead animal and plant remains.
Well known scavengers include vultures, burying beetles, blowflies, and raccoons.
Scavenger is also what the British refer to one who is employed to remove dirt and refuse from the streets.

Category:Chemistry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chemistry is the science of matter, its structure and properties, and the transformations it undergoes.
It is often called "the central science" because it is not concerned with the fundamental energy or forces that hold matter together studied in physics or the consequences and characteristic of complex organisms studied in biology (see physics, biology).
Consequently, chemistry includes the study of microscopic phenomena, such as clusters of atoms and their characteristics on the nanometre scale, and macroscopic phenomena, such as the interaction of proteins and DNA in complex solutions and the properties of new materials.

Professor of chemistry Jean M. Fréchet, with postdoctoral fellow Niren Murthy and their colleagues, designed a polymer that falls apart in acid to form thousands of little molecules that swell and explode the cell's digestive chamber before the acids have a chance to degrade the antigens.
Scavenger cells, mostly macrophages and dendritic cells, engulf and try to eat them, basically tearing them limb from limb and displaying the pieces on their surface.
Scavenger cells, called antigen presenting cells, successfully displayed antigenic information on the cell surface, which would presumably allow T cells to be activated in the body as well, Shastri said.

chemistry may be performed in a manner where libraries of compounds are generated as mixtures with complete identification of individual compounds postponed until after the compounds are screened with positive results.
The aldehyde substituent on the solid supported scavenger readily reacts with excess amine reagent in the lactam library forming process of the invention and binds the excess reagents to the solid support to thereby permit their removal as a solid phase by methods known in the art, such as filtering, centrifugation, decantation, and the like.
The scavenger may also be added at the same time as the addition of the reducing agent in step (c), provided that they are added after the scaffold and amine reactants have had sufficient time to complete the reaction.

 C&EN 970224 - Combinatorial Chemistry
The idea of combinatorial chemistry is to form large "libraries" of molecules en masse--instead of synthesizing compounds one by one, as has been done traditionally--and to identify the most promising "lead" pharmaceutical compounds by high-throughput screening of the libraries.
Chemistry professor George Barany of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, who specializes in solid-phase synthesis, says: "I still think for convenience that solid phase is going to be the way to go.
In combinatorial chemistry, as in opera, it isn't over until the fat lady sings--meaning usually that a lead compound is in the drug development pipeline.

The total amount of combined scavenger and microparticle is determined by the desired level of retention, as measured by a consistency sensor.
A certain amount of cationic scavenger is required to neutralize the anionic trash, and a certain amount of microparticle (colloidal silica or bentonite) is customarily used to control retention, drainage and formation.
The total amount of scavenger and microparticle will determine the absolute level of retention, and the optimum balance between them will occur at the optimum zeta potential, which will coincide with the point of maximum drainage.

 Combichem scavenging
A benefit of such scavenging is that it permits chemical reactions to be driven further in the desired product direction by enabling the addition of a large excess of one of the reagents.
Because multiple scavenger resins can be used in concert (even incompatible functional groups can be used because of their comparative isolation within the beads), a wide variety of compounds can be scrubbed from the solutions.
Although commercial scavenging resins tend to be available only in bead form, the use of scavenging filter disks (in a process called solid-supported scavenging) is a recent physical variation of the scavenger process.

In a new publication submitted to the Handbook of Fluorous Chemistry, Lindsley and Leister of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the Merck Research Laboratories, summarize three variations to the light fluorous scavenging paradigm, based on reaction conditions and the nature of the fluorous scavenger employed (Handbook of Fluorous Chemistry, 2003, submitted.)
Often times, a solution-phase tertiary amine base may be employed in a fluorous scavenging reaction to either deprotonate the scavenger or to sequester acid generated during the reaction.
During the course of a scavenging reaction, the fluorous reagent/scavenger can be converted into a charged species such as salt.
