The Chronicle: Information Technology: October 2, 1998
In a hypertext narrative, for instance, a reader might encounter a screen or two of text describing a sex scene, click to a seemingly unrelated passage about an argument between the two intimate characters, click to an excerpt from a famous novel that relates to the hypertext story, then click back to the sex scene.
Joyce's students will regard hypertext fiction by semester's end is still an open question, but then, so is the future of the genre.
That hypertext novel, afternoon, a story (Eastgate Systems, 1987), immerses readers in the mind of a man who realizes one afternoon that the victims of a car accident he witnessed that morning may have been his ex-wife and son.

January 6, 1998: Some Thoughts on Writing Hypertext Fiction
The difference between regular fiction and hypertext fiction, however, is that in a hypertext the reader both interprets the data that they’re given, and has a greater degree of choice in the way that they navigate it.
Similarly, within a hypertext, you could be within a scene about a young pilot’s dream of flight, and click on say “soaring” and jump to a scene in which that pilot is soaring into the side of a mountain.
Serial fiction has its place on the Web, but that has more to do with the way that people read on the Web than it has to do with hypertext literature.

 Secret Pens Feedback Forum
For example, in general fiction set in real life, if a woman was walking alone and another woman she didn't know approached her, the reader would automatically start cataloguing the possibilities of what could happen next, and this unconscious thought process would add to, or even actually form the essence of, the story.
For a familiar universe & it a science fiction or fantasy series or a story set in real life) the reader goes in already knowing what is "allowed" and "not allowed", and it's their knowledge that shapes the story for them.
What actually happens is up to the writer, but the reader has been properly led up to the scene by their own gut level understanding of the background.

Science fiction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A science fiction writer is generally not trying to write a history of the future that they believe will happen, any more than a writer of westerns is trying to create a historically accurate depiction of the old West.
While most science fiction is set in the future, most authors are not attempting to predict; instead, they use the future as an open framework for their themes.
In defining the scope of the science fiction genre, we speak of the effect of science or technology, or both, upon society or persons; within the context of imaginative fiction there are a few variables.

 Barnes & Noble.com - 47
His life in the slave quarters begins with having his number literally branded on his shoulder in a brutal scene, which palpably captures the cruelty of the period.
The sections of 47 that deal with slave life are powerfully described and haunting, and the references to the legendary character of High John give the character of Tall John added depth; I found the SF plot less compelling and rather confusing at times.
Number 47, a fourteen-year-old slave boy growing up under the watchful eye of a brutal master in 1832, meets the mysterious Tall John, who introduces him to a magical science and also teaches him the meaning of freedom.

Mars is the scene of the last of three recent space operas by John Barnes: In the Hall of the Martian King (2003).
Mars is shown as being previously inhabited by an ancient race of aliens who created a machine for producing a breathable atmosphere on the planet.
Interest in Mars has been stimulated by the planet's dramatic red color, by early scientific speculations that its surface conditions might be capable of supporting life, and by the possibility that Mars could be colonized by humans in the future.

Zoroastrian and Parsis in Science Fiction
Disregarding Ellison's appropriation of Zarathustra's name in a philosophical scene, the only science fiction novels we are aware of with actual Zoroastrian characters are Harrison's Bill, the Galactic Hero (in which the title character is a Zoroastrian), and Stephenson's The Diamond Age (which sports a minor, unnamed Parsi banker).
Science fiction writers, aware of the precarious and possibly declining numbers of the Zoroastrian population, may prefer to avoid predicting the continued existence or significance of a such a group.
Zoroastrianism is mentioned rarely within science fiction, and when it is mentioned, it is usually only in passing.

Can an author evoke an entire scene, event, emotion, meeting, etc, in flash fiction and make it so real and strong that the reader is convinced of its authenticity?
