The health of marriage is particularly important in a free society, which depends upon citizens to govern their private lives and rear their children responsibly, so as to limit the scope, size, and power of the state.
The cornerstone cases acknowledging marriage as a fundamental right are laced with language referring to the ancient recognized nature of that institution, specifically tying part of its critical importance to its role in procreation and thus, to the union of a man and a woman.
This view of marriage radically sidelines the main feature that makes marriage unique and important as a social institution--that is, the attempt to bridge sex difference and struggle with the generative power of opposite-sex unions, including the reality that children often arise (intentionally and not) from heterosexual unions.

Scenes from a Marriage is an extremely well acted drama and, at the time, Bergman was nearly alone among filmmakers willing to examine human relationships with such honesty and depth.
All this said, Scenes from a Marriage does have its share of memorable moments: Marianne watching Johan building a fire and recalling the man she fell in love with; Marianne's visit to her recently widowed mother (Wenche Foss), a woman resigned to the fact that when her husband died he took her identity with him.
As was common in European television of the period, Scenes from a Marriage was shot (by Sven Nykvist) in 16mm in 1.33:1 format.

The TV version has a few added scenes, such as Johan and Marianne eating, and him complaining of his and Paula’s shit little concrete apartment, as well as Johan declaiming their marriage was too dependent on material things, and that was its weakness.
While it details a marriage, that marriage fails not because of the husband’s midlife crisis, nor does it even fail because of the wife’s first infidelity and over-compensatory smothering, but because the two characters were simply ill suited for one another — personally, emotionally, politically, sexually, and philosophically.
Were that not so Scenes from a Marriage would not be as engrossing, insightful, and relevant a work of art as it still is, as it would be like so many other marriages and films in the real world — thriving on the low hum of ignorance that its participants and viewers enjoy.
