  Painting and Scenic Art
Although scenic artists sometimes work with toxic chemicals, painting is a fairly safe endeavour as long as proper protective equipment is worn, and safe working procedures are followed.
Household paint can be used in some instances (as long as it is water-based), especially for basic fl and white, but it is usually not meant to be thinned..
In scenic painting, consecutive wash coats, each one thinned a bit more than the last, are applied over a base coat to create depth and richness.

Scenic painting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Theatrical scenic painting is a wide-ranging craft, encompassing virtually the entire scope of painting techniques and often reaching far beyond.
To be a well-rounded scenic artist, one must have experience in landscape painting, trompe l'oeil, portraiture, and faux finishing, to be versatile in many different media (such as acrylic-, oil-, and tempera- based paint), and be an accomplished gilder, plasterer, and sculptor.
But increasingly scenic painting is looked upon as a separate craft, and scenic painters are expected to subordinate their artistic ideals to those of the designer.
