It was first published on November 16, 1994 as a result of an action surrounding the (The act of assuming or maintaining a squatting position) squatting of a disused courthouse in Brighton and an attempt to turn it into a community centre.
SchNEWS was co-founded by David Berry, who also designed the SchNEWS logo and masthead, and Gibby Zobel, who later went on to work for the (additional info and facts about Big Issue) Big Issue.

 Case Studies
The aim of SchNEWS is to distribute the news which is ignored by the mainstream news and to an extent filter the mass of information available to a digestible size or one A4 sheet.
SchNEWS is run entirely by volunteers, roughly 25 people at any one time, and in an non-hierarchical manner, using consensus decision making and monthly review meetings to determine courses of action.
SchNEWS is available via email, posted on their web page, posted through the post (available free by post with the provision of stamps), and distributed by hand on the street, through festivals, bookshops and groups copying the originals and handing them out in their own region.

SchNEWS is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a tour across the UK from April 10th to 30th.
The weekly direct action news sheet was born in a squatted Courthouse in 1994 as part of Justice?, Brighton's campaign against the Criminal Justice Act.
Since the PGA conference in 1998, SchNEWS includes global news: the Global Street Party at the G7 Summit in Birmingham, J18, the WTO protests in Seattle, Nov 1999, which brought the anti-capitalism movement to the attention of the world and marks the beginning of the indymedia network.

For the past nine years SchNEWS has been very fortunate to get free office space from the band The Levellers but that’s changed.
However, SchNEWS is still about £200 a month short for paying for printing, the telephone, postage, biscuits, computer bits, etc. So they’re asking if a few more people would be up for setting up standing orders to give them a steady income - even £1 a month would help.
SchNews need to know very soon so they can decide, literally, their next move.

 Milano Encuentro: SchNEWS #300
At Monday's open collective meeting ("every week we have an assembly where we manage the building, anything from 30 to 200 attend"), some are dressed very straight like they've just come from their job in Milano, along with all the people just mentioned who work at the Centro Sociale.
SchNEWS saw them all shouting, rolling their eyes, banging the table, standing up, sitting down, pointing, heckling and talking over each other in a spirit of communal unity and collective purpose.
