The cycle of transformations in the houses of Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania
The area of Schaefferstown, first settled in the early 1730's, bears the unmistakable imprint of German architectural ethnicity, though this has been little studied in a rigourous way.
These statistics indicate two major trends in the housing of Schaefferstown and of Pennsylvania Germans in general: (1) An early acceptance of stoves for heat; (2) An initial increase in the number of rooms in the house (and a concomitantly smaller size of those rooms), followed by a return to approximately the original configuration.
The enormous family gatherings of the Mennonites and the religious gatherings of the Amish have caused the reinstitution of the flurkuchen floorplans of the forefathers.

 Schaeffer House
The Alexander Schaeffer House is a nationally significant property for its association with Alexander and Henry Schaeffer, the builders and founders of an important inland eighteenth century trading center and one of the only surviving Baroque-planned Germanic towns in America, and as a rare example of the culturally-distinct German building typology.
With a period of significance spanning from 1758 when Alexander Schaeffer built the first section of the house to 1842 when Henry Schaeffer’s sons sold the property, the Schaeffer House is significant in the areas of Architecture and Community Planning and Development.
Developed using academic European planning principles, Schaefferstown became an important crossroads community in Colonial America, and still survives with exceptional degree of architectural and historic integrity.

Schweitzer Family - by J. Hall Backenstose
Perhaps the biggest confuser is that the immigrant Casper Schweitzer is well-documented (at least in bre2) as being a physician, but at least two entries appearing in the records of the King George Inn of Schaefferstown list transactions with a Casper Schweitzer who was a nail maker.
And yet a Casper Schweitzer with wife Anna Maria was in or near to Schaefferstown from around 1760 to 1790 judging from purchases at the King George Inn and the baptisms at the Schaefferstown Reformed Church.
Bre2 states "From fragmentary records preserved of the early membership of the congregation, as well as from other reliable sources, we have been able to compile the following list of names, comprising all members, as far as they could be ascertained, prior to the year 1800..." (bre2 p15).

Lebanon Daily News - Feds sign off on route for Schaefferstown bypass   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Two federal agencies have given their approval to the path chosen by local planners for a Route 501 bypass of Schaefferstown, clearing the way for the project to get back on track after a six-month delay.
After several years of study, including evaluating the impact to nearby historic areas, PennDOT and local planners had settled on a direct 1.5-mile route, running south from the intersection of Route 501 with routes 419 and 897 and reconnecting with the highway near Michters Road in Heidelberg Township.
Although that path runs through farmland and is adjacent to the centuries-old Brendle Farms, a National Historical Landmark in Historic Schaefferstown, it was preferred over a handful of other alternatives that would have cost more and affected more properties, said county transportation coordinator Jon Fitzkee.
