Schalk Burger, the South Africa flanker, has had his four-match ban halved following a Rugby World Cup appeal hearing in Paris today and will now miss only the pool games against England in Paris tomorrow and Tonga in Lens on Saturday week.
Burger was cited for a dangerous tackle on Junior Polu, the Samoa scrum-half, during South Africa's 57-9 victory in Paris on Sunday.
Burger appealed against the ban and today’s appeal committee, which consisted of chairman Justice Wyn Williams, Bruce Squire QC and Judge Guillermo Tragant, decided that the judicial officer had been wrong to rule that Burger was not at any time during the incident intending to win the ball.

Schalk was schooled at Paarl Gimnasium, and enjoyed success in many sports, not least of all cricket.
In 2004 Burger was selected as part of a rejuvenated Springbok squad, who under the guiding hand of new coach Jake White went on to win the Tri-Nations trophy for the first time since Nick Mallet's team managed the feat in 1998.
Burger's father told a Cape Town radio program that the injury was between his sixth and seventh cervical vertebrae, adding, "Although the operation is difficult the fact that the injury is lower down his neck is good for a future prognosis of making a full recovery."

Schalk came back on and was the scapegoat and binned.
The past 2 tests the support play from the other forwards were not like in the Tri-Nations leaving Schalk (who is mostly there first as he is usually the one making the tackles) to either slow the ball down for the rest to arrive or re-group.
The only sense in this is that he (Schalk Burger) does not understand the rules and thinks that he is above them or maybe he thinks everybody including the refs are blind and will not see him.
