Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are communities that are accorded special status by the Constitution of India.
The Scheduled Tribes were unable to participate in the community life of the Indian Society and were thus deprived of any opportunity for integration with the rest of the society and corresponding opportunities for educational, social and economic growth.
Therefore, to prevent atrocities against the people belonging to Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes and punish the offenders of such crimes, the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 was enacted by the parliament.

The Dalit Christians should be given the Scheduled Caste status and privileges so that they can enjoy the same political rights and socio-economic benefits as all other Scheduled Castes.

New Delhi - Crimes against Scheduled Castes (SCs) or socially marginalised groups in Uttar Pradesh will now be investigated by senior police officials of the rank of deputy superintendent of police, the labour ministry said Friday.
The state government acted on the advice of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC), which objected to the government directive and even summoned the state chief secretary to discuss the issue, it said.
The commission held that the circular violated the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act of 1989.
