Because music as a profession had not achieved social respectability in his country, Rimsky entered naval college at the age of 12, became an officer, and spent three years at sea, and for a dozen years was Inspector of Naval Bands.
The nature of Rimsky’s creativity evolved slowly, for the young Russian had to divide his time between music and a primary career.
The composer denied the existence of a specific program for the work, explaining that most of the melodies do service for a variety of unrelated situations and moods, and in a subsequent edition he even disposed of the descriptive headings he had originally given to the movements.

Rimsky was possessed of this genius to a degree approached by only one other composer - Richard Strauss.
He wrote, in Scheherazade, music that is neither profound nor superficial, neither intellectual nor sensual, nor greatly varied or highly developed in its melodic content; yet he accomplished a living, moving musical portrait of the East, as fancy would have it, that is one of our musical treasures.

What also ought to be noticed, but sometimes isn't, is that Rimsky-Korsakov marshals his material with absolute sureness of aim and no little subtlety.
Scheherazade has always been such a favorite with audiences that certain musicians and critics, careful of their reputation for high-mindedness and intellectual distinction, have felt called upon to scoff at it.

This is the first time I have felt that a recording of this suite exploited all the possibilities, from the drama of the tales Scheherazade recounts each of 1001 nights to keep from being beheaded to the beguiling nature of Scheherazade herself.
Temirkanov certainly has the potential to do something special with Scheherazade, but what we get instead is an all-around straighforward reading, good but not spectacular sound, and some nice expressive touches here and there.

 Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade
Listening to these two themes, and the sweeping music of Scheherazade's tales that transports us bodily into the magic of the 1001 Tales of the Arabian Nights, one can only wish that Rimsky-Korsakov had had the time to produce settings for the other 997.
The piece opens with a stately motive in the low brass, which represents the disaffected Sultan who vowed to kill every woman he wed until he was captivated by Scheherazade's stories.
Spurred by the necessity of completing his friend's opera Prince Igor, he returned to his work full-force, and soon produced some of his best-known works, including Scheherazade.

Composed in 1888 by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov (1844—1908), Russian master of orchestration and luminous tone-painting, Scheherazade recreates the legend of the Sultan Schahriar, who, convinced of the perfidy and faithlessness of women, vowed to execute each of his wives after the first night.
It is one of the world’s most beloved symphonic compositions — a shimmering, evocative musical treatment of the legend of Scheherazade.
But the Sultana Sheherazade saved her life by tell- ing the Sultan fascinating stories for 1001 nights, staving off her demise by keeping the sanguinary ruler in a state of suspense over the outcome of the tales she told.

New Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock FM-FY
I don't detect any conceptual themes among song titles that might be suggested by the album title other than a vague "life's experiences." Nineteenth century classical afficionados will want to note that "The Sea/The Shipwreck" is based on fourth-movement of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade." Well, I guess it's time to roll out the obligatory criticisms.
Above all, this concerns the sound of today's Focus, which, overall, is heavier than ever before, even though there is only one track on the album, the stylistics of which represents a real fusion of Classic Symphonic Art-Rock and Prog-Metal.
By the way, all the eleven tracks on the new Focus album are, IMHO, either excellent compositions or masterpieces.

Based on the "Arabian Nights" stories, the Suite reflects Rimsky-Korsakov's fascination with the mysteries of the East, and the program fields such elements as the violin solo representing the storytelling voice of a sultan's wife, Scheherazade.
The sections evoke the landscape of fabled Arabia in rich orchestral color as only Rimsky-Korsakov could achieve.
The work carries through several tales, all linked by the recurrence of Scheherazade's voice via the solo violin (tenderly enunciated here by Steven Staryk).
