Scheldt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Scheldt (Dutch: Schelde, French Escaut) is a 350 km[1] long river that finds its origin around Gouy-Le-Catelet in the north of France, enters Belgium and near Antwerp flows west into the Netherlands towards the North Sea.
Originally there were two branches from that point: the Oosterschelde (Eastern Scheldt) and the Westerschelde (Western Scheldt) but the river was in the 19th century cut off from its eastern (actually: northern) branch by a dike that connects Zuid-Beveland with the mainland (North Brabant).
In the time of the French Revolution the river was reopened in 1792 and once Belgium in 1830 had claimed its independence from The Netherlands the treaty of the Scheldt determined that the river should remain accessible to ships headed for Belgian ports.

The deepest channel sections develop along the outside of the river bends with the channel shifted somewhat down stream from the shoreline bend.
When there is an alternating current direction in a narrow channel the only influence of the tide on the river bathymetry is to make the location of the deeper channel in the river bends correspond more closely to that of the shoreline bend.
Since a river flow will also contribute to the filling of the tidal prism, this volume is not equal to the time integral of either the inflow or the outflow during flood or ebb respectively.
