Scheldt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Scheldt (Dutch: Schelde, French Escaut) is a 350 km[1] long river that finds its origin in the north of France, enters Belgium and near Antwerp flows west into the Netherlands towards the North Sea.
Originally there were two branches from that point: the Oosterschelde (Eastern Scheldt) and the Westerschelde (Western Scheldt) but the river was in the 19th century cut off from its eastern (actually: northern) branch by a dike that connects Zuid-Beveland with the mainland (North Brabant).
In the time of the French Revolution the river was reopened in 1792 and once Belgium in 1830 had claimed its independence from The Netherlands the treaty of the Scheldt determined that the river should remain accessible to ships headed for Belgian ports.

Young Water Action Team | Knowledge Base | River Basin Report: Scheldt River
The river basin, with a surface of 21680 km, is bounded by the North Sea, a couple of coastal basins north to the Seine and by the river basins of the Maas and the Ijzel.
The Scheldt is a rain-fed river, this means that the rainfall and the water policy in the river basin mainly determine the amount of water these rivers need to carry off.
These rivers are characterized by a fall smaller than 150 meters during the entire length of the river.

In the Belgian sector of the river Scheldt the dredged spoil consists of fine sand mixed with a varying volume of mud, depending on the season.

Entire towns were looted and burned; and the King of France, apparently powerless to stop the Norsemen, withdrew his troops, thereby abandoning the lowlands of the Scheldt to the raiders.

The river input of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus to the ocean system is obviously of great importance in a discussion of the interactions of these compounds in the estuarine and adjacent coastal zones.
However, in the Zaïre river the anoxic zone is restricted to the bottom water near the head of the canyon where the detritus of terrestrial plants accumulates.
The behaviour of phosphorus in the Scheldt estuary is much more complicated (Figure 14.6) because of the existence of an extended anaerobic zone, long residence times of the water masses, and intensive shoaling occurring in the upper part of the estuary.
