  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Scheltopusik
The Scheltopusik Ophisaurus apodus (formerly Pseudopus apodus) is a large Glass lizard found from southern Europe to Central Asia.
In colour the adult Scheltopusik is usually a pale earth brown, with a lighter coloured head and paler ventral surface.
Specimens from the Caucasus and Transcaucasia have a "mosaic" effect on the dorsal surfaces caused by irregularly situated paler scales among the brown ones [Engelmann et al].

 Buffalo Zoo New Births
The Herpetology Department continues to have success with their collection of Scheltopusiks, also known as European glass lizards (Ophisaurus apodus).
Scheltopusiks have been a part of the Reptile House since 1976, and at one time, the Zoo held the largest collection in the United States.
One easy way to tell the difference between snakes and scheltopusiks is to look for eyelids—lizards have them while snakes do not.

Open wooded areas (inc. vineyards and olive groves) or (in C. Asia) rounded hills with loess soil and short grass are its preferred habitats: in the latter it utilises rodent burrows.
Scheltopusiks are quite predacious and in addition to normal invertebrate prey (especially gastropods) take rodents, small birds and lizards and snakes.
Young scheltopusiks have very contrasting colour patterns that fade to a uniform light yellow (in the Caucasus and C. Asia) or coffee colour (in the Mediterranean).

Pseudopus [Ophisaurus] apodus: Natural History & Care
In colour the adult Scheltopusik is usually a pale earth brown, with a lighter coloured head and paler ventral surface.
Specimens from the Caucasus and Transcaucasia have a "mosaic" effect on the dorsal surfaces caused by irregularly situated paler scales among the brown ones [Engelmann et al].
Deals mainly with the natural history of the species: notes that little is known of the mating habits of the species, and that the young tend to live a secluded "underground existence".

 ANGUIDS
This may partly be due to the divided nature of the family (part Old World, part New): all European field guides, for example, have details of the slowworm and the scheltopusik, while West Indian field guides doubtlessly carry details of the Celestus species.
The other factor is that these lizards have been somewhat neglected of late in herpetoculture, although some make good and hardy pets.
Usually a very good source of information, although it has been pointed out to me by one source in at least one section there was a "theoretical" guess as to the captive requirements of a particular species that is in reality very hard to keep alive.

The European glass lizard or scheltopusik (Pseudopus apodus) was also common and generally distributed.
Mostly lying in damp grass the scheltopusiks take flight very quickly while somebody approaches.
To catch this funny looking reptile you have to dive on the ground as soon as you discover it lying down and you can only catch it, when no shrub is close by.

I'm guessing what you are talking about is either a species of European legless lizard "Scheltopusik", or a glass lizard from the Americas.
