With the onset of three decades of peace in 1713, Schenectady began to grow again - its population fueled by the natural increase of the descendants of the original patentees and a number of newcomers as well.
Like Albany, Schenectady experienced its first significant contact with the larger American scene during the Seven Years War when it became a major staging area and was overwhelmed by British and provincial soldiers - all of whom expected to be boarded and fed by the inhabitants.
In 1764, Schenectady's growth and development were recognized when it was accorded borough status by the royal government - in practice, an underdeveloped form of government that was to include a mayor and alderman.

The canal effectively eliminated Schenectady's role in the import/export of goods and isolated the Stockade from the growth being experienced by the rest of the city, leaving the area largely residential and saving it from later demolition in the name of progress.
The many scientific advances based in Schenectady include the first steam powered passenger train in the U.S. (1826), the air brake for trains in 1869, the alternating current motor which enabled the expansion of the electric power industry, and a high frequency alternator that enabled the world's first radio broadcast of music in 1906.
Schenectady was also home to the first radio station in New York State, the first experimental television program broadcast in 1928, and the first regularly broadcast television program.

Schenectady is said to have had at this time about 80 houses and 400 inhabitants, of which 60 were killed, 27 made prisoners, and the village burned.
After the destruction of this stockade, another one was built immediately that served until a new fort was built about 1705 at the opposite corner where now is the junction of Front, Ferry, and Green streets, named Queen's Fort in 1705 and also known as Royal Fort.
