Greenland and the Faroe Islands of Denmark, although formally excluded from the Schengen area, are integrated with it.
The Schengen Agreement was created independently of the European Union in part due to the lack of consensus amongst EU members, and in part because those ready to implement the idea did not wish to wait for others who were not ready.
Member States of the Schengen area have elaborated uniform rules as to the type of visas which may be issued for a short-term stay, not exceeding three months, on the territory of one, several or all of those States.

 Schengen Visa : categories
The 15 Schengen States have laid down uniformed rules as to the type of visas that may be issued for stays not exceeding 90 fays in any half-year on the territory of one or several of those States.
It will only be granted if the other transit or entry conditions laid down by the Schengen Agreement are met, being the means of subsistence that travellers must have at their disposal, the purpose and the conditions of their stay and a valid travel insurance.
Group visas are normally issued to groups of between five and fifty people.

One of the main legal documents constituting this entity is the Schengen Agreement, signed in 1985 (Schengen I), and followed by a signed commitment to it's implementation in 1990 (Schengen II).[1]   When the treaty of Amsterdam was signed in 1997, this agreement became part of the larger body of EU law.
The Schengen Agreement was meant to implement the freedom of movement and residence for citizens of the EU member states.
Those two countries are negotiating to become part of the Schengen Agreement only for purposes of unified and integrated law enforcement policy, but not as far as any immigration procedures are concerned since those are considered to be too liberal by their governments.

I recall reading that the 90 day period does not run during the time that you spend outside of the Schengen area, but that a new 90 day period does not start when you return; you only have the balance of your original 90 days.
He said if I leave the Schengen group with days remaining (out of my 90 days) and want to return to complete them, I enter only at the discretion of immigration for whatever Schengen country I'm entering and it's not guaranteed that you can finish up your 90 days.
The Schengen Treaty simply allows for open boarders between the signatory countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.
