Schenley Park - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Schenley Park is a large municipal park located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania between the neighborhoods of Oakland, Greenfield, and Squirrel Hill.
The park is made up of 300 acres (1.21 km²) donated by Mary Croghan Schenley in 1889 and another 120 acres (0.49 km²) that the city subsequently purchased from her.
The park borders the campuses of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh.

Schenley Park old glory is goal of 20-year overhaul
Schenley exemplifies the classic design of 19th century parks because it combines formal gathering spaces such as Flagstaff Hill with pastoral landscapes for athletic activities, such as Schenley Oval, and the wildlife area of Panther Hollow, Bonci said.
All that remains of the original entrance is the Mary Schenley fountain and a bosquet or thicket of sycamore trees that parallels a walkway to Carnegie Library.
Mary Croghan Schenley prevailed in the courts and, in 1889, gave 300 acres to the city, stipulating that the land be called "Schenley Park" and never be sold.

 Oakland: People: Mary Croghan Schenley
When Capt. Schenley visited the Pittsburgh heiress' school and eloped with her, he was absent without leave, old letters have revealed, from his post of Her Majesty's commissioner of arbitration in a mixed court for the suppression of the slave trade in Dutch Guiana.
Schenley Park should rightfully be O'Hara Park, many students of Pittsburgh history feel, because it was Mary Schenley's pioneer grandfather, Gen. James O'Hara, who owned the land, eventually willed to her.
That Mary Schenley always loved Pittsburgh, and perhaps had a nostalgic yearning to live here once again in spite of a happy life, filled with the care of her six daughters and a son, and with the direction of her estate after her father's death, is proved by her numerous gifts to the city.

 The William Pitt Union
The Schenley was not just the place to stay in Pittsburgh as the 20th century began: it was where the young ladies of society "came out," where couples married, and where one could dine on the "haute cuisine" of the day.
The 1950s Schenley was surrounded by hospitals, educational facilities, concert halls and private clubs with no parking to serve the hotel’s mobile guests.
In 1956, the then Schenley Park Hotel was sold to the University of Pittsburgh to serve, among other things, as its student union.

 Schenley Plaza - News
Schenley Plaza, the space between the Carnegie Museums and Library and Hillman Library, used to be a park that opened into the larger Schenley Park, but over time, it evolved into the parking lot Pitt students know today.
Susan Golomb, director of Pittsburgh's Department of City Planning, explained that when Mary Schenley sold the property to the City of Pittsburgh, she stipulated that it be used for a public park, and therefore Schenley Plaza technically cannot be used for parking.
Clark explained that Schenley Plaza makes up only 2 percent of the available parking spaces in Oakland, and to compensate for the loss of parking spaces, the Allegheny Conference on Community Development will run a study examining the current parking situation in Oakland and how it could be improved.

The visitor center is a green building, and there are volunteers who work their ways around the four parks trying to remove the many invasive species that have begun to destroy the biodiversity in the parks, explained Pauley.

This study interprets the history of Schenley Park in a manner that addresses the park as a system, examines the ideological and temporal layers in it, and connects these to the physical landscape.
Though the focus on ideas and themes are associated with Schenley Park, the study identifies its relationship to broader social, political, and economic conditions both in Pittsburgh and in the national context of the United States.
In this manner, this project reveals multiple dimensions to the park and suggests that intervention should be planned in a holistic manner that integrates the physical, ideological, and temporal layers of the landscape.
