Scherzo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A scherzo (plural scherzi) is a name given to a piece of music or a movement from a larger piece such as a symphony.
The scherzo developed from the minuet, and gradually came to replace it as the third (or sometimes second) movement in symphonies, string quartets, sonatas and similar works.
The scherzo remained a standard movement in the symphony and related forms through the 19th century.

But after Beethovens mature scherzo has run through the stages of scherzo, trio and scherzo dii capo, it goes through the same trio and da capo again; and perhaps even tries to do so a third time, as if it could not find a way out, and is then playfully and abruptly stopped.
The scherzo of the C minor symphony was originally meant to go twice round; and a certain pair of superfluous bars, which caused controversy for thirty years after Beethovens death, were due simply to traces of the difference between the prima volta and seconda volta being left in the score.
Chopin produced a new type of scherzo; independent of the sonata, but still in the quick triple time (one beat in a bar) which is Beethovens typical scherzo rhythm.

It typically retains the 3/4 time signature and ternary form of the minuet, but is considerably quicker.
The scherzo remained a standard movement in the symphony and related forms right through the 19th century, and composers also began to write scherzi as pieces in themselves, with Frederic Chopin writing four quite well known ones for the piano.
An unrelated use of the word in music is in light-hearted madrigalss of the renaissance period, which were often called scherzi musicali.

Scherzo’s force was evident during the height of their popularity in the '90s — Nirvana's shift toward introspective songwriting in the mid-'90s never would have happened without them — but their influence echoed throughout several subsequent generations.
Scherzo’s influence throughout punk music was equally powerful, and they mark a pivotal turning point in its 21st century evolution, signifying when the genre moved away from traditional songs and toward personal songwriting.
Even when their sales declined in the late '90s, Scherzo’s presence was calculable.

It was with the same intention that Schumann removed the Ritar-dando, which had been written out in full in the original version at bars 105-108 and 234-237 of the Overture.
In the Scherzo the proportions were altered, first by dropping the repeat of bars 9-55, secondly by adding bar 72 and deleting a very similar bar after bar 46.
Only the first few bars of the original version of this movement are extant; they reveal changes of proportion in the introductory bars and show that Schumann had originally envisaged only one ad libitum trombone instead of three.

The scherzo's admission to the canon of movements in regular Classical usage dates from Haydn's quartets op.33 (1781), but it was Beethoven who established the scherzo and trio as a regular alternative to the minuet in sonatas, symphonies and chamber works.
As an independent movement the scherzo came vigorously to life in Chopin's four examples for the piano.
Brahms's Scherzo op.4 is of a similar kind, with two trios.

Some of these performances are considered historic, such as that given by the Chilean Claudio Arrau, a legendary figure among pianists, who offered a memorable recital to celebrate his 85th birthday, a poignant occasion as it was the last concert he would ever give in Spain.
SCHERZO’s concerts also provided the setting for the premiere of four new works (SCHERZO commissions) by composers Eduardo Rincón, José Luis Turina, Mauricio Sotelo and Carlos Cruz de Castro, and for the promotion of new talent.

Stravinsky: Petrouchka, The Firebird Suite, Scherzo a la Russe   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Facing an intriguing compositional challenge in the Firebird, Stravinsky followed the example of Rimsky-Korsakovís opera The Golden Cockerel and represented the natural characters and scenes in a diatonic style, while the supernatural was interpreted with chromatic music.
The best example of this style is Scherzo a la Russe, which was supposed to be part of the soundtrack for the movie The North Star, which was made in response to President Rooseveltís appeal to Hollywood for some films that paid tribute to the Russian troops fighting the Nazis.
Two of Stravinskyís most famous ballets share the disc with the Scherzo à la Russe, one of the works that the composer started as a film score (on the theme of Russian resistance to the Nazis) but soon--as was often his wont--metamorphosed into a symphonic work.
