A control program was put in place by National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to clean up the infestation by mechanically harvesting the open areas and, with the assistance of volunteers, including some National Parks Association (NPA) members, manually removing the weed from shallow and sensitive areas of the lagoon.
Aerial shooting is not a viable option in the thickly-vegetated landscapes of Royal National Park, but this option should be reconsidered for some areas if future broad area fires lead to an influx of deer seeking fresh 'pick', and safety issues can be addressed satisfactorily.
