Schiavona   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The Schiavona is one of the most beautiful of all the basket-hilt swords.
Originally used by the Slavic Mercenaries hired by the Doge of Venice, the Schiavona proved to be such an effective and attractive sword that it was soon in use all throughout Europe.
The Schiavona, like its contemporary, the Claymore, was a cut and thrust sword, and although used alone, frequently a light buckler or target was also employed.

In this (short) summary, Bull suggests that the use of the schiavona was confined to the late 1600s and early 1700s.
A fine schiavona, with a pommel of brass and semi-precious stones, and a guard that is less complex than the Del Tin reproduction, is shown in Frederick Wilkinson’s book "Arms and Armour" (page 94, 1996, Chancellor Press, London, England, ISBN 85152 957 8).
Given the development of the schiavona sword summarized by Fulvio Del Tin, this is a reasonable and historically acceptable difference in style.

myArmoury.com: The Schiavona and its Influences   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
This translation is interesting in that it suggests that the naming of the weapon follows the habit of referring to a sword as a "she." Regardless, the common definition for schiavona cited in many texts specifically meaning a "hired soldier" is likely incorrect.
Other than the distinctive pommel found on these swords, the full development of the schiavona hilt is defined by a common design that, for the most part, incorporates a construction methodology unique in the realm of the basket-hilt.
The schiavona has its principle bars all attaching at the ends of the crossbar and traveling up to the knuckle-bow in a diagonal manner, askew to the plane of the blade rather than parallel as on other basket-hilt variations.

Schiavona - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The schiavona was a renaissance sword that became popular in Italy in 16th and 17th century.
Stemming from the 16th century sword of the Venetian Doge guard, the name came from the fact that the guard consisted largely of Dalmatian Slavs (Schiavoni).

even though a longsword with a basket hilt and a schiavona are entirely different weapons, they'd carry the exact same game statistics (like a knife and a dagger, or a longsword and a sidesword).
IMHO, the schiavona would be an uncommon weapon, but not so different from a longsword that you need an EWP for it.
