In de jaren 1853 en ’54 werden op Schiermonnikoog twee vuurtorens gebouwd op een kilometer afstand van elkaar en 30 meter hoog.
Schiermonnikoog is het enige waddeneiland dat nog een dorpsomroeper kent.
Tot enkele jaren geleden was dit de jeugdherberg van Schiermonnikoog, maar inmiddels is de herberg luxueuzer en toegankelijk voor alle leeftijden.

Though the island is almost free of cars (there are lots of taxis and buses, and some of the inhabitants have a car), we managed to take a picture of the ferry with the only car which left at the same time as we did.
