A schizomid is an invertebrate animal belonging to the order Schizomida in the class Arachnida, in the subphylum Chelicerata of the phylum Arthropoda.
Like the related orders Uropygi, Amblypygi, and Solpugida, the schizomids use only six legs for walking, having modified their first two legs to serve as sensory organs.
The name means "split or cleaved middle", referring to the way the cephalothorax[?] is divided into two separate plates.
Like the related orders Uropygi, Ambypigi, and Solpugida[?], the schizomids use only six legs for walking, having modified their first two legs to serve as sensory organs.
As of 2000, 219 species of schizomids have been described worldwide, most belonging to the Hubbardiidae family.
Schizomids are small arachnids (up to 1 cm or so) that possess a short “tail” (or flagellum) which in males is developed into a knob-shaped structure that is gripped by the female during mating.

These orders are not familiar to many because of their size (although uropygids are large, schizomids and palpigrades are very small), their secretive habits (individuals are typically found in caves, the leaf litter and under rocks and vegetative matter), and their being restricted to the warmer regions of the Earth.
As in the closely related schizomids, amblypygids, and solifugids, the first pair of what are walking legs in other arachnid orders are elongated and thin.
Schizomids are generally smaller than uropygids (for a better comparison click on the thumbnail photos to obtain larger versions of the schizomid and the uropygid).

Today the Schizomids are still very small (around.2" to.3"), lack eyes, and have a tiny 3-segmanted tail.
The pedipalps of Schizomids are very sufficient killing tools designed somewhat like spiked, retractable pincers that are used for preying on tiny arthropods such as mites and ants.
Schizomids of the genus Trithyreus can be found in southern California and those of the genus Schizomus can be common in South America.

About 75% of all specimens inhabited the mineral subsoil (3.5-7 cm depth) where monthly catches were negatively correlated with temperature and moisture content of the soil.
In the palpigrad and schizomid species, females were about twice as abundant as males.
The lack of a distinct reproductive period and the presence of juveniles and adults (both sexes) throughout the year indicate a plurivoltine mode of life.
This is a photo of a specimen of Stenochrus portoricensis from La Palma, Canary Islands, an example of a schizomid.

REVSYS Collaborator Dr. Oscar Francke travelled with undergraduate students Alejandro Valdez (UNAM) and Jesús Ballesteros (Instituto Politecnico Nacional) to Frontera Corozal, in the Lacandona Rainforest Biosphere Reserve, where he is involved in a survey of arachnid diversity in conjunction with the Instituto de Ecología, UNAM.
Approximately 500 specimens, were collected, including 2 palpigrade species, one schizomid species, one onychophoran species, a new Diplocentrus species and possible new Centruroides species.
Although no troglobitic scorpions were found, numerous troglobitic amblypygids, opilionids, schizomids and myriapods were obtained.
