Their sound is easily identifiable, especially when you consider an album like Daydream Nation, which followed in the wake of the fairly 'small' Sister.
The overall tone of the album is extremely warm, due to the fact that (smart) people still used analog tape in 1987.
I like this album a lot but as you said it just wasn't quite as good as Daydream Nation, of course nitpicking about something like that is like complaining that you only won $20 million in the lottery and not $25.

The album is still great though since you get what you want at the beginning, and then the filler at the end can be stopped whenever you get tired of it.
I think the albums finest moments are in its so called "filler." "The Diamond Sea" is fairly interesting, but when I put Washing Machine on, half the time I want to stop it before it even starts.
The biggest problem with the album are the Kim Gordon tracks, which don't mesh with the rest of the album, but out of context sound good.

It is his mastermind that has created the tour-de-force recording breakthroughs of the album, the realistic and panoramic landscape of pre-Carnaby Street England, arranged the setting so that each member of the band could give full vent to his vaunted and highly unique instrumental prowess.
Ironically, this is a finely produced album, with a sound that is both hard and lush, and Roger Daltrey seemed to achieve a larger-than-life performance as the embattled mod Jimmy.

 Schizophrenia by Wayne Shorter CD
During his prolonged apprenticeship as a sideman in the 1960s, Shorter managed to outstrip such formidable leaders as Art Blakey and Miles Davis, becoming the defining conceptual catalyst in their greatest ensembles--both as a composer and improviser.
Over the course of several albums as a leader for Alfred Lion's Blue Note label, Shorter transcended the long shadows of such important early influences as John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins, developing an elliptical style all his own, and a fantastic repertoire of original material.

 Gyrofrog: Schizophrenia
The World Book Encyclopedia, in its article on schizophrenia (which immediately precedes an article on Phyllis Schlafly), flat out explains that "the term [schizophrenia] does not mean that a person has more than one personality." It's right there in fl-and-white where anyone with access to a set of encyclopedias can see it.
Whether or not he or she remembers it, anyone who has taken an introductory psychology course in college has been taught that schizophrenia is not the same thing as having multiple personalities.
Yet despite the fact that the correct information concerning schizophrenia is readily available to most people, the incorrect association of this psychosis with disorders involving multiple personalities seems to be very widespread.

C-Rayz Walz: Year of the Beast - PopMatters Music Review
Perhaps this was intended to create a more oppressive atmosphere (which it does), but the subtle difference between the two voices spitting 80% of the lines results in a dissonance which just makes the end result more difficult to listen to.
In fact, that could be the album's biggest problem: Even if you think what you're hearing is pretty decent, there's very little chance you remember much of it once you flip it off.
Year of the Beast is all over the place, and the in-album schizophrenia does little to drive home the presence of talent that C to the Ray to the Z obviously possesses.
