Schizosaccharomyces pombe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Schizosaccharomyces pombe, also called "fission yeast," is a species of yeast.
It is used as a model organism in molecular and cell biology.
Fission yeast was isolated in 1893 by Lindner from East African millet beer.

pombe holds no hint of a large-scale genomic duplication of the type that occurred in budding yeast and many other organisms; there is a small (approximately 50 kilobase) duplication near the telomere, however.

Meiotic recombination and chromosome segregation in Schizosaccharomyces pombe
An especially tractable organism for the study of meiotic recombination and chromosome segregation is the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe (2).
For example, S. pombe rqh1 (rec9) and S. cerevisiae sgs1 mutants lack closely related DNA helicases; although the rqh1 mutants are reduced ~5-fold for meiotic recombination (ref. 25, J.Young and G.R.S., unpublished data), the sgs1 mutants are not significantly reduced (26).

 Forsburg Lab pombe Pages: Introduction
The word pombe means beer in Swahili, and this yeast was originally isolated in millet beer from eastern Africa.
pombe is between 2 and 4 hours) and are easy to manipulate in the laboratory, so we can learn about the function of these conserved regulators very rapidly in yeast, and such knowledge can be used to understand what happens in complex systems in which experiments are more difficult.
S. pombe was originally isolated from a millet beer (see the history pages for the original characterization of S. pombe).

Schizosaccharomyces pombe in the Cande Lab   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
In 1893, P. Lindner was the first to describe Schizosaccharomyces pombe.
He isolated the yeast from East African beer, and chose as its epithet the Swahili word for beer, pombe.
The genus name Schizosaccharomyces reflects the characteristics pombe has in common with Saccharomyces (spore formation and fermentation capabilities) and the major difference between them, the morphology of cell division.

Schizosaccharomyces pombe (fission "yeast") has been classified in a taxonomic group termed 'archiascomycetes' that is believed to belong to an ancestral assembly of the ascomycetes.
pombe branches before the divergence of budding yeasts and "filamentous" ascomycetes (such as Neurospora, Penicillium and Aspergillus), however with low bootstrap support, and by using the little sophisticated evolutionary models that were available at the time of publication.
The view that S. pombe maps to a different part of the tree than expected is supported by phylogenetic analyses using mitochondrial sequence data, however, at this time point, also only with 'reasonably high' high bootstrap support, but not with ML tests.
