Meiningen is a town in Germany - located in the Southern part of the state of Thuringia in the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen.
The fairy tale collector and writer Ludwig Bechstein was an archivist in Meiningen.
The place was first mentioned in 982 A.D. and was chartered in 1344 A.D. Its inhabitants are known as Meininger.

Johann Steurlein was the son of Caspar Steuerlein, or Steurlein, the first Lutheran pastor of Schmalkalden.

 Schmalkalden, Wilhelmsburg Palace
When Schmalkalden, as part of the electorate of Hesse, passed to Prussia in 1866 the administrative offices remained in Wilhelmsburg Palace.
It towers above the town of Schmalkalden and was originally erected to protect the nearby mountain path.
The joint rule lasted until the last Count of Henneberg died in 1583 and the Hessian Landgrave Wilhelm IV became the only ruler of the Schmalkalden lands by a settlement.

 The Ruins of Henneberg Castle
In an area southwest of Meiningen, called the Grabfeld, the remains of the ancestral castle of the Counts of Henneberg are situated on the peak of a rock above the town of the same name.
The spacious fortification, once one of the largest in the area of southern Thuringia and Franconia, was originally built to protect the road from Würzburg to Meiningen.
There is documented proof that from 1096 the Counts of Henneberg named themselves after the castle, perhaps even as early as 1037.

 Ludwig Bechstein Biography
His situation improved only when his uncle Johann Matthäus Bechstein, a renowned naturalist and forester living in Meiningen in the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen in Thuringia, adopted him in 1810.
He was born in Weimar, the illegitimate child of Johanna Carolina Dorothea Bechstein and Hubert Dupontreau, a French emigrant who disappeared even before the birth of the child, and Ludwig thus grew up his first nine years in very poor economic conditions.
He was sent to school, and in 1818, started an apprenticeship as an pharmacist.
