Schnucks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Schnucks underwent a major expansion in 1995 when it purchased from Loblaws the National Supermarkets chain, also based in St. Louis.
Part of the Schnucks growth to dominance in the St. Louis grocery market also has to do with the abandonment of the St. Louis area by the AandP chain, also in the '70s, and the Kroger chain in 1986.
On the morning of July 21, 2006, at a Schnucks in Cordova, Tennessee, an employee stabbed 8 co-workers, critically injuring 4, before a witness tackled him.

Even Harmon went ballistic, calling Schnuck's comments "sort of a blanket indictment of the city" with "a connotation that was unpleasant, whether it was intended or not." He added that "the implications of it are racial, (although) I'm not accusing them of being racist," according to the Post.
Schnuck said the closings were the only way to keep the other Schnucks stores in the city viable.
Schnuck noted that the community-development grant at Natural Bridge was negotiated in 1993 -- well before the National buyout -- and also claimed that minutes of National board meetings to which Schnucks become privy after the buyout show that National planned to close the Delmar store in any event.

The FTC had alleged in that case that the acquisition would substantially reduce supermarket competition in the St. Louis metropolitan area.

The St. Louis-based Schnucks and Dierbergs grocery store chains have agreed to change the way they price the renting of videos after an investigation by Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon.
The investigation, which began last year, raised concerns about a surcharge included on customers' receipts that looked like a sales tax and was typically assessed at the same rate as the local sales tax.
Because both grocery chains paid a use tax to the state at the time they purchased the videos, they were not required by state law to collect sales tax with each rental.
