	Scholium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Scholia were altered by successive copyists and owners of the manuscript, and in some cases increased to such an extent that there was no longer room for them in the margin, and it became necessary to make them into a separate work.
		For the most part, the Greek scholia we possess are anonymous; the commentaries of Eustathius of Thessalonica on Homer and John Tzetzes on Lycophron are prominent exceptions.

		As we talked, it became apparent that with some adjustments, the infrastructure of the Suda project could be made to work for other projects, such as translating all or some of the Homeric scholia.
		With some luck and energy (and keeping in mind the success of Suda On Line) I can envisage a situation in which three years from now a non-trivial percentage of the more interesting Homeric scholia are accessible to the reader in ways in which they have not been since Byzantine days.

		Because a scholiast is a writer of scholia.
		A scholium (pl. scholia) is a mediaeval term for a margin note on meaning or grammar, added by a later writer - who is then called a scholiast.
		Since this website is mostly (but not exclusively) an index of links to other sites, with "marginal" notes and comments, I found the term apposite.

		Dozens of fragments of ancient glossaries to the Homeric poems — so-called Scholia Minora in Homerum — have been found in Egypt, and most of the world’s important papyrological collections possess at least one, if not several specimens.
		They range from lists of words, chosen from a particular passage of the Iliad or Odyssey and jotted down on a separate sheet of papyrus, to professionally produced rolls or codices pertaining to one or more books of the poems.
		Whoever wishes to know whether a given Homeric word is in fact glossed in one of these texts, where it is glossed and how, must first track down the various publications and then read through each in search of what they are after.
