  School for Scoundrels
In School for Scoundrels, director Todd Phillips (Road Trip) proves that his truest virtue is also his greatest vice.
Scoundrels gets off to a sluggish start as it introduces its main character, Roger (Jon Heder), a geeky New York City meter maid (meter butler?) whose life is falling apart.
Scoundrels is light fare at its lightest, a truly average movie.

School for Scoundrels has been marketed as a comedy at its foundation, directed by Todd Phillips, the same creative mind behind Old School and Starsky and Hutch.
In School for Scoundrels the most memorable scene is on the tennis court, a battle between Roger and Dr. P that brought on non-stop laughter throughout its entire duration.
School for Scoundrels may not be the best comedy of the year, but Phillips is a master at creating memorable comedic scenes and Scoundrels does present quite a few of those.

Movie Review: School for Scoundrels - /FILM
School is based on a 1960 British film of the same title, and is directed by Todd Phillips, the guy who brought you Old School and Road Trip (note: Philips is also a writer on the Borat movie).
In School, Hedder turns out a very sympathetic comedic performance (minus the horrendously bad crying scene), a couple sequences definitely show that he could be a great physical comic actor, if the audience and studio ever let him.
School for Scoundrels has a bunch of laughs and is better than most of the comedies Hollywood spits out now-a-days.

 Review: School for Scoundrels
School for Scoundrels introduces us to Roger (Jon Heder), a guy who's so low in the self-esteem department that he doesn't even attain the level of "loser." He's rejected as a Big Brother and, while working at his job of handing out parking tickets, he agrees to pay a fine to placate an irate driver.
School for Scoundrels is loosely based on a 1960 Ealing comedy (which I have not seen) that was, in turn, based on the novel School for Scoundrels or How to Win without Actually Cheating!
For the most part, School for Scoundrels is a grim experience, with too little wit and humor to compensate for its faults, and the upbeat ending feels like a cheat.

"School For Scoundrels", written and directed by Todd Phillips ("Old School", "Road Trip"), has a very promising premise, we have seen similar set-ups in hundreds of comedies, but every joke is just wrong, oddly paced and there are no laughs throughout this tedious, tedious film.
In "Scoundrels", the set-up is wasted, the actors are wasted and any comedic momentum is completely obliterated by the writing and directing.

'School for Scoundrels' - MOVIE REVIEW - Los Angeles Times - calendarlive.com
The comedy "School for Scoundrels," about a victimized, love-struck New York meter maid (Jon Heder of "Napoleon Dynamite") who gets tutored in jerky alpha male-ness, may not be as devilishly enjoyable as its title suggests, but it's by no means like waiting for the reprieve of an end-of-class bell, either.
Loosely based on a 1960 British comedy, this is a modest education-of-a-punching-bag entertainment with a kind of breezily rude compatibility — a hallmark of sorts for both co-writer/director Todd Phillips ("Road Trip," "Starsky and Hutch") and the wonderful actor assigned to play the self-help instructor from hell, Billy Bob Thornton.
For example, the mealy-mouthed charges of Thornton's Dr. P getting a quick lesson in the cruelty of paintball is undeniably funny, as is the crosscutting montage showing Roger (Heder) and classmates in their everyday lives working up the nerve to pick insanely self-destructive fights with bullies and thugs.

By Billy Bob Thornton teaches weakling to be macho in 'School for Scoundrels,' also starring Jacinda Barrett and Jon Heder.
Given its premise -- an adult school teacher attempting to remake wimpy men into fearsome macho studs -- pic seemed certain to either fly high on outrageous humor or crash under the weight of tastelessness.
Despite his hyphenate status, director-producer-co-scribe Todd Phillips ("Old School") does not appear to be engaged with the story and characters, which may partly explain why Heder and Thornton's characters come off as so lackluster.

Todd Phillips apparently wanted his new comedy, School for Scoundrels, to be both a raucous, fl comedy and a romantic comedy, and only the winning presence of Jon Heder saves the boisterous comedy part.

In School for Scoundrels, starring Jon Heder as Roger, a nebbishy New Yorker who takes bad cad Billy Bob Thornton's dating confidence course, Phillips doesn't have three funny, charismatic leads; he only has one.
Which is School for Scoundrels' biggest flaw: Like too many modern romances, it thinks our minds make some link between an actor's place in the billing of the film and their character motivations.
But that's why Thornton's so easy to watch in School for Scoundrels: He's playing a seducer, and he seduces us with Dr. P's feral swagger, followed by 'sensitive revelations' that are actually as carefully planned as the placement of a sniper's nest.
