Raphael Rooms - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This second fresco, entitled the School of Athens, represents the truth acquired through reason.
Raphael began the third composition at the end of 1509 or the beginning of 1510.
In order to do this Raphael went back to the School of Athens, sketch a freehand drawing of Michaelangelo directly on the fresco, applied a cartoon (giant piece of paper that picks up the pigment of the drawing) to it, chipped away the plaster, applied it fresh and transferred the cartoon to the plaster.

 Reading Images - Iconography/Content
We don't know what the original title of the fresco was; "The School of Athens" is first documented in the 17th century.
In 1508, just a year before the fresco was painted, however, a professor from the University of Rome gave an oration to Pope Julius II in which he described contemporary Rome as the "new Athens," which preserved not only Latin wisdom, but also that of Ancient Greece.
In literature Dante describes such a gathering of philosophers in hell (Inferno, IV, 130-144), but the subject had not been depicted in Renaissance art before; the closest visual parallel is the relatively common decorative theme, Famous Men.

The Philosopher as Hero: Raphael's The School of Athens
The School of Athens is something of an ambiguous title in that despite the presence of such eminent Athenians as Socrates, and his various students Xenophon, Alcibiades and Diogenes, there are many non-Athenian worthies in the famous scene.
We see non-Athenian figures who are known to have visited Athens such as Parmenides and his disciple Zeno, and there are also thinkers who lived long after the death of Aristotle such as Epicurus.
As it turns out the "school" of Athens can be found in places and times very distant from where the tradition of Greek moral and philosophical reasoning actually began.
