Loїs Mailou Jones was born in Boston in 1905 and began formal art training at the city’s High School of Practical Arts before receiving a scholarship to attend the Museum School, where she majored in design and received both the Susan Minot Lane Award and the Nathaniel Thayer Prize in Design.
The first African-American female artist to have a retrospective in a major museum (at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 1973), Jones’s paintings are included in many of the world’s major collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

The Boston MFA is one of the best museums in the country, but it is a commute from Tufts so you’d end up not really belonging to either campus.
My son ended up at Williams which offers an excellent (albeit small) fine arts department, an outstanding art history department (with 3 worldclass museums on or near campus) in the context of a solid liberal arts education.
A lot of these schools sound great, but I am unfamiliar with their locations and I doubt getting in would be easy.

Between 1876 and 1909, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, was housed in the basement of the Copley Square building.
When the Museum moved to Huntington Avenue in 1909, the School moved into a separate, temporary structure to the west of the main building.
In 1987, a newly renovated and expanded school building, designed by architect Graham Gund, more than doubled the size of the existing structure and provided an auditorium, enlarged library, expanded studios and classrooms, a spacious new entrance, cafeteria, and increased gallery and exhibition spaces.
