The most beautiful experiment (September 2002) - Physics World - PhysicsWeb   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The most beautiful experiment in physics, according to a poll of Physics World readers, is the interference of single electrons in a Young's double slit.
Demonstrations can vastly simplify the experimental process through the use of modern equipment constructed with the "right answer" in view.
Demonstrations and simulations can misrepresent by encouraging the sense that a scientific experiment is just an illustration of an already formulated lesson - turning the experiment into a paint-by-numbers masterpiece, as it were - rather than a process by which a hitherto unknown truth becomes disclosed for the first time.

Common-Sense Physics. Alternative scientific theories and experiments.
It is vital in the further understanding of the experiment, to appreciate that the rest of the beam, which is not blocked, passes the razor edge too far away to be affected or deflected by the edge.
This experiment shows that the two principal theories of light phenomenon, wave and quantum theories, are flawed and should be recognised as such, so that modified versions can be formulated.
To prove an experiment wrong, one has to show that there is an error in the experimental method or that the results of the experiment have been wrongly observed.

 Physics Demonstrations - Introduction
The usual style of books on physics demonstrations is to list the important concepts and to give a large number of demonstrations to illustrate each one.
The majority of these demonstrations, though pedagogically sound, are not very suitable because they require close, careful measurement, or they are not easily visible to a large audience, or they are simply not very exciting.
There are certainly more "scientific" ways to demonstrate the variation of the speed of sound with the density of a gas than by breathing helium and sulfur hexafluoride (section 3.1), but few students will forget the result, and it is hard to resist wanting to know the explanation.
