As opposed to the elementary school level, much more emphasis is placed on identifying various kinds of career interests associated with success in a particular kind of work and contrasting them with measured pupil career interests.
By making "work" the key word in conceptualizing career education and the teaching/learning process, we hope to produce school leavers with the kinds of positive work values that will motivate them to seek work as well as a job.
The purpose of this article is to present an updated picture of career education and how it fits into the current "transition from schooling to employment" undertaking.

Improving School-to-Work Transition for All Students
It is extremely important for key stakeholders to be involved in collaborative planning from the beginning of the process to ensure that the entire school community is committed to the implementation of school-to-work transition plans.
Teachers, administrators, counselors, parents, students, postsecondary representatives, business, industry, labor, and community representatives work in partnership to plan and implement systems that will improve school-to-work transition for all students.
Add in a national high school dropout rate of 11 percent - and as high as 50 percent in some urban areas - and the net result is that the majority of American high school students approach adulthood without the skills to sustain themselves economically or succeed in postsecondary education.

 School-to-Work Transition
In fact, some may not perceive students' transition from school to work as their responsibility, and may make little or no effort to collaborate with employers.
Because the success of school to work depends on the participation of all involved, professional development is necessary to prepare teachers for these new challenges and responsibilities.
One high school English teacher who had recently completed a "back to industry" internship had this to say: "What I found out there [in the work place] pretty much validated a lot of the things I was already doing in the classroom, but also encouraged me to incorporate more of these things.

What Does Research Say about School-To-Work Transition
At the same time, there were visionaries who foresaw an academic and vocational education secondary/post-secondary "seamless garment" curriculum that facilitated students' transition from school to work.
The events surrounding the implementation of vocational education after 1917 are the root cause of many of the systemic failures students face in the transition from school to work today.
This means that schools must provide for all what in the past has been available only to some, and that they also must provide the new skills required in the modern work world.

 School-to-Work Transitions in Rural Communities
The education task force worked with school officials to implement a course on rural development in the high school and a program for students to shadow employers for a day.
Many of the smaller school districts, Knudsen says, would not normally seek this money because the revenue gained does not justify the effort or paperwork required to complete the grant.
The administration worked with students to develop the program and had students present it to the school board.

Transition from School to Work: Facilitating Employment Using
Assistive Technology and Supports
For example, a student may be able to use a manual wheelchair at school, but this may not be appropriate for work if it takes him or her 30 minutes to get from the car to the job site and is exhausted before the work day begins.
A coworker is the most natural person to assist the student in the workplace, but school personnel also may provide on- going assistance.
These individuals should be involved as well as the employer, coworkers, and school staff (e.g., the on-the-job CBI trainer) who provide support to the student within the workplace.

Parents and the School-to-Work Transition of Special Needs Youth
Although transition planning is enhanced by the combined efforts of a multidisciplinary and interagency teams, collaborative consultation is effective in solving problems parents and students encounter in making school and work transitions.
The intense desire many parents share--to help their children succeed in school, work, and community living--is a powerful force prompting them to develop the skills they need to coordinate programs and services for their children.
Multidisciplinary transition planning teams--whose core members include parent(s) or guardian, along with the teacher, student, and a staff member appointed to coordinate the transition planning process--are one way of bringing parents into the mainstream of the transition process (O'Neill et al.

 School to Work
Representing developmental psychologists, educational psychologists, family psychologists, school psychologists, vocational psychologists, and industrial/organizational psychologists, the task force members discussed the contributions of their respective areas of expertise to understanding the transitions of youth from high school to the world of work.
The initiative focuses on the transition of school-age children to work.
In our discussions, we recognized that our collective knowledge base has much to offer in understanding those transitions and that this knowledge base having not been a significant part of the national implementation of the school-to-work initiative may account, at least in part, for the initiative’s lack of success.

 School-to-Work Transition-Research
The major topics are (1) the need for effective school-to-work transition and its relationship to the goal, (2) the current status of business involvement in school-to-work transition, and (3) common elements of effective connections between education and work.
However, for these partnerships to be successful, business must increase its understanding of the type of educational reform required--that which facilitates and enhances school-to-work transition.
Because early educational reform efforts focused on college-bound youth, little attention was given to the need for improving school-to-work transitions of noncollege-bound youth.

Funderstanding - School to Work Transition
School-to-work programs provide ways for students to transition successfully into the economy, either through paid employment with a business or self-employment.
From middle school on, schools should orient youth to work, help them explore different types of jobs, provide guidance about career paths, and assist them in finding work relevant to their needs and interests.
Numerous studies reveal that, upon high school graduation, many students who aren't college-bound are neither prepared for nor connected to employment opportunities.
