Based on the performance and drilling of wells in the area, it was known that a suitable water supply could be obtained by drilling to a depth of approximately 620 feet and that the aquifer at that depth would be artesian in nature.

This is in Benzie County in the Township of Colafax.
At that time it was Township of Deerfield, it was changed to Covert in about 1876.
