Schoolly D. He was in Hip-Hop connection number one, he was in Hip-Hop Connection 100 and now, lucky fella, he’s in Hip-Hop Connection 110.
Abel’s your man. Or rather, Schoolly D is, contributing six new songs to the score of the Blackout While also proceeding apace with work on his own millionth LP.

Schoolly D's rather lackluster rapping style and repetitive material doesn't place him in the forefront of hip-hop creators, but he does merit mention (or blame, depending on your perspective) for being an early gangsta proponent.
His career got a bit of a boost after the Chemical Brothers sampled him on their 1997 Dig Your Own Hole album, creating a bit of interest in a rapper few of the late '90s youth were familiar with.
Furthermore, Schoolly D's relationship with esteemed film director Abel Ferrara gave him the opportunity to collaborate on the soundtracks to several of the directors films such as The Addiction and Kings of New York.

Tapes of these little-seen episodes float through the mail and suddenly the D is a cult.
So there's no need to buy Tenacious D just for the yuks, because yuks can be found everywhere.
KG might actually be the more important member of the D: his nimble guitar playing and soaring harmonies are one thing, but his wicked encyclopedic knowledge of rock and classical music are what really drive this album's motor and make it absolutely essential.

 Blastitude 14: Record Reviews, S-T
As far as I know, Schooly D's debut records were the first raps to be explicitly from the point of view of the gangsta himself.
Even then I might say it could possibly be parallel development, except that another NWA song "8 Ball" has a chorus that goes "I WAS" just like Schooly D went "I DON'T" on "I Don't Like Rock 'n' Roll" from a year earlier.
Anyway, this is some sort of compilation of old Schooly D. IS THE FIRST TIME THESE CUTS HAVE BEEN ON CD!" booms hot type on the back cover, and it should boom, because this disc will make all hip-hoppers say "holy s**t." This is raw.

Schoolly D never wanted to be a rapper.
When he started out in 1979, he was hoping to be a DJ.
Lately, Schoolly's been scoring movie soundtracks, touring Europe, recording with his new band, the U.S. Funk Mob, and teaching his 5-year-old son Rashaad how to work the vinyl.

 Hardknox - Self-Titled - Review
This 11-track release is that debut, and as the name of the group may suggest, they do kick some amped-up beats.
Although the graffiti-esque cover and explicit lyrics stamp might remind one of a rap album at first, the only thing this disc has in common with that genre is the Schooly D sample on one track.
The interesting thing about the disc, though, is that instead of most songs being up in a very high BPM range for the dancefloor, the group is content to kick a slower groove and layer things on as thick and heavily as they can.
